Do people with Aspergers perform compulsions as a symptom or is it not that similar to OCD? It is confirmed that I have the symptoms of OCD, but I was wondering if people with AS also perform compulsions?

Well, I know that, when I had real compulsions, that they were almost fun, and an inherent part of my character. I was sorry to see them wiped out. Obsessive interests are ALSO fun, and not your run of the mill compulsion.

Some Aspies can have compulsions, but as far as I know, it is not universal within the AS community.

I think that compulsion go along with the AS. Our obssesion are kind of compulsive. The only difference is that a clinical compulsion is a negitive, were as our obssesion are a positive.
I also have ocd like simptoms. But I take meds to control them.

I think it could just be a symptom....or depending on what it is, it could be OCD.

tthere's a HUGE difference between autistic obsessions and OCD obsessions. if your compulsions are related to an "obsessive interest", then you are probably just like all the other ASDers... if they are related to something obsessive that creates anxiety, then you probably have OCD... and since you apparently qualify for OCD, then you probably have it.

cecilwhatever is right about the AS compulsions being more positive while OCD compulsions are negative. like OCD is more "I gotta do this or something bad will happen". AS is more like "I gotta do this. I gotta do this. I gotta do this. I gotta do this. It really interests me..."

I think that I have obsessive thoughts that are borderline OCD. But as far as my routines and interests, I would say that they are a part of AS.

My husband, and I were just arguing the other day over this very question. He insists that my obsession over the computer is a symptom of OCD, and that I need to quit self-diagnosing myself with AS. I told him what the other posters have stated, that OCD compulsions are rituals that one compulsively engages in to relieve the feeling that something bad is going to happen if they don't do the ritual. AS compulsions are highly enjoyable, and NOT tied to a feeling of irrational anxiety.

meh, I have AS and OCD. however I don't see OCD to be as much of an issue as AS, OCD is just really annoying to me. :(
