Having computer trouble.

Hey all, a bit of help needed here.

Yesterday my sister had a clear out of a number of files from the computer in order to increase disk space. Unfortunately she didn't appear to have looked at what she was deleting and since last night a number of programs have refused to open.

Most frustrating is the loss of the file that allows me to read XML files, such as MSN chatlogs etc. Normally this wouldn't annoy me too much but I need to note down some information I got from somebody via MSN the other day and now I can't access the conversation to find it.

MSN itself is also refusing to work, the box has been informing me all day that the ''service is temporarily unavailiable'' despite there being no connectivity issues.

An attempted system restore plus an uninstallation and reinstallation of MSN have both failed.

If anyone could help then that would be great.

Check to see if a firewall has been enabled blocking that service. If so you can usually create an exemption.

Have scouted about on my virus protection software and ensured that MSN is allowed and still no joy.

I have the error code that pops up if that's of any use. It's 800401f3.

Google is your friend, there are plenty of references listed for this error code.

Lots of pages on it, but unfortunately my obsession isn't with computers and therefore I don't understand what on earth any of them are talking about.

I think I shall explore a little more.

You can read xml files they are human readable use a text reader program. find the xml file load into the program that sould work to read it. This program works good. http://www.flos-freeware.ch/

It sounds like a .dll file (subprogram) is missing or corrupted. Uninstalls tend to leave pieces of applications behind, so a reinstall may fail. If you go to www.ccleaner.com and download ccleaner it will clean up the uninstall as well as other problems. I tried it for the first time last night and removed about a half gig of useless files with no problems. It also fixed my registry. Uninstall again, run ccleaner, then visit Microsoft update to see if it detects anything missing and load whatever it flags, then reinstall. If this doesn't work, you may need to call MSN tech support.

Run ccleaner once a week to keep the disk clean and defragment it once every month or two to clump the free space together.

I think you should go to a computer professional for help.

LOL. sorry.. Is it possible to reinstall these programs? You may have to do that.

Reinsalling wont work as its a problem with the registry that a reinstall wont fix.

Now, almost 5 hours have passed by!

What has become of this?
