I had it explained to me once by therapist that there is usually three parts to our conscious and we can hear these as 'voices' inside our heads.
I only had two at the time and one was very critical and bullying of the other which had become very submissive, so I had to create the missing third voice which is the balance between the two and this would tell the over-critical voice to shut up and leave me alone as I was doing the best I could.

I used to have a part of me that would take over when I needed to do something courageous, like speak in public or stand up for myself, but I went through an extremely stressful couple of years when she was dealing with everything for a long time resulting in me having a breakdown and she died. I suppose I am more balanced now but I miss that ability.

I have heard external voices a couple of times, one was helpful and would tell me how to do things better like you describe but on one occasion I had an evil voice spending ages persuading me to do something quite bad. I don't think these are related to mental illness as I believe there are good and bad spirits around us all the time that try to influence our lives and this is inclusive in the beliefs of my religion anyway. I do wonder if schizophrenia is related to an over sensitivity to this and that the voices they hear are actually real.

I talk to myself constantly, in my head or out loud, and I often have fake simulated "conversations" with other people in my head (often I'm babbling about computers or something else that interests me).

I've never heard voices that weren't mine (or that I wasn't simulating), and honestly I'd be terrified if I ever did.

Last thing I heard was that more people actually "hear voices" than originally believed. (Like the occasional sound of someone calling your name, etc...) The question I suppose is how a person perceives them. (Or reacts)

I talk to myself too, reply to my thoughts or imaginary people (under my breath) and sometimes even very occasionally hear the words. It's not that uncommon.
