I am proud to announce the creation of a WrongPlanet.net Dashboard Widget.

This WrongPlanet.net widget allows you to view the latest posts on the WrongPlanet.net Asperger's Syndrome community website. By using this widget, you will be able to view the most recently updated forum threads and the latest contributor to the discussion merely by invoking Dashboard.

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is required. If you’re using Safari, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, show Dashboard, click the Plus sign to display the Widget Bar and click the widget’s icon in the Widget Bar to open it. If you’re using a browser other than Safari, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, unarchive it and place it in /Library/Widgets/ in your home folder. show Dashboard, click the Plus sign to display the Widget Bar and click the widget’s icon in the Widget Bar to open it.

Alex,

Do you need someone to port this to Linux. I would like to give it a try.

What about Windows? That's what most people have isn't it?!

Well, it should be fairly easy to port this to Konfabulator which runs on windows and, now that Yahoo purchased it, is free.

I could probably make something like this in Java...

Wouldn't it have been easier to just add an RSS module to WrongPlanet? That way you wouldn't be limited to OS/X and Safari, as almost all modern browsers support RSS on all platforms, and numerous 3rd party applications exist to parse the RSS data and present it in non-browser contexts (such as MythNews on the MythTV media platform).

It *is* just an RSS feed with a wrapper. Why didn't you say so?

My last message on this topic - I promise!

Alex: If you add the following to your generated HTML somewhere between </title> and </head> then people who use FireFox or any other RSS-aware application will automatically get a "subscribe to RSS feed" button when they visit your site:

Quote:
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="WrongPlanet.net RSS" href="http://wrongplanet.net/forumRSS.php" />

The "subscribe" icon is built-in. When the visitor clicks on it they get a pop-up menu that says "Subscribe to 'WrongPlanet.net RSS feed'" (or whatever else you put in the title attribute of the link). If they click on that menu entry then FireFox pops up the usual "create bookmark" window. Once the bookmark is saved, when you go to the bookmark list the WP logo is replaced with an RSS logo, and the bookmark becomes a dynamic menu that shows the latest WP posts right in the bookmark list.

I do not understand your technical jargon. I have Windows, with Firefox. Can I use it?

Yeah you can get RSS feeds in firefox as active bookmarks. I had actually added that to the site sometime along the line and I noticed that I must have accidently taken off the link.

Oh, btw, look Apple.com has our widget!! !! !! !! !! !! !!
