It's not fair. I keep wanting to pull off and twist off anything around my fingernails that isn't smooth. I'm getting better at resisting but it used to be so bad that I'd frequently have to use a pencil to dial the phone.

To you younger folks, yeah, phones had these dial holes, meant to cause pain to overly bitten up fingers.

It's not my fault. Nature shouldn't have made cuticles. They're just sitting there waiting to be obsessed with.

It took me some thirty-odd years to at least get it under a measure of control,
still do but manage to stop when it's just gone too far again.
And lots of preventative bandaging....

The nails still show it, and of course get their share as well.
Nothing wrong with push-buttons...

Ah! I love those old rotary phones! (But I'm not old at all...)

But anyway, I don't have a major problem with fingers in general. I have a habit of picking hang nails but I can control it most of the time. when I was younger though, I had band-aids on my fingers all the time to keep from messing with them. >.<

why don't you just use cuticle trimmers?

http://www.amazon.com/Tweezerman-Squeez ... gplanet-20

they don't cut up your fingers and they remove all peeling skin.

My husband asks me the same thing. It's because I ignore my nails until I'm stuck somewhere and need to fidget. Then it's just me and my cuticles.

I have a similar problem with my nails and cuticles. I pick at them constantly. If I have an uneven nail, I'll bite and pick at it until it bleeds and I often get minor infections at the corners of my nails. Gross, but I can't seem to help it. I do the same with hangnails and uneven cuticles.

Keep a pair in your car and a pair at home.
