My son has a substantial speech delay - he is two and communicates like an infant (point/grunt/cry). Is there anything I can do at home to help? We do have Baby Signing Time DVDs, but they're quite pricey so we don't have many.

Oh by the way, he doesn't imitate much either, except for signs.

Where are you located? See if there's a local REgional CEnter who can do an evaluation and services for your son- or check with the local school dist. for early intervention services.

our PBS has signing time and we record it for our kids to watch over and over.

Have you looked at your local public library. some have video sections with things like this.

as a short term solution, if he has the ability to recognize pictures, then you can use a digital camera to take photos of commonly asked for items in your house......he can point to the pictue of what he needs

Agreed, I have several friends who use these quite a bit.

My son only had 1 word at age 2. He got speech therapy through the birth through 3 services in our county. I really don't think he would have talked if that therapist had not worked with him. She taught me how to frustrate him slightly to get him to use words. That was difficult for me because I always knew what he wanted. I had to selectively ignore some of the grunting until he supplied the word.

By age 3, he was still speech delayed, but not significantly delayed. His articulation was not delayed at all...just some language delay.
