I like talking about the world ending in 2012, thats interesting. I don't have a problem with talking about the other stuff, i'm sure most people will be ok with it. Politics and religion are always touchy subjects though and can cause arguments, as i've learned

Just be respectful. Do not interrupt, do not raise your voice. If the other person does, when they are finished, remind them of what they have done and tell them you'd like to keep the conversation respectful. That fixes the problem 90% of the time in my experience.
