might i ask how big this file is?
are the 2 computers on the same network?

off the top of my head: burn a cd or dvd, use a floppy, or email it to yourself.

It's about just under 5 gigs and I don't have a network except for the WiFi that allows my laptop to get on the net. I don't have any disc's big enough to hold the file.

All I can come up with in this situation is to put both machines on the same router and enable filesharing on the computer running xp. Or I think you could try setting up a virtual private network.

Sorry if this isnt of much help.

I think that can be done but its not the easiest thing to do because you would need a special usb cable that the machines could both recognize as a device. If you could connect the two computers with firewire than that would work..

again sorry im not of much help... im starting to get tired.

edit:
Just remembered that in order for the usb method to work you would need to set up file sharing as well...

You could try a free web host company, load the file into your FTP then download it on the other computer. This place here appears to offer the size that you would need to transfer the file.

You could use compression software but I'm not sure if that would help much with files that big. Windows XP comes with a basic compression utility but I don't think it will do much for you. If you want to try it, I would suggest using something like 7zip, winrar, winace, or winzip.

a) burn to a DVD, holds like 4.7 GB

b)split the file in three 1.7 GB files with Winrar to copy them to your usb:
Right click > Add to archive
choose at the bottom the size of the splitted file. It will create three files: .RAR. R01 .R02
Use Winrar again to open/extract the files in the laptop (you'll need to open the .RAR file)
