Both my sons had hernia repairs - one at about age five, one at about age nine. Both did fine. They were not in any significant pain afterwards. I don't think they even needed tylenol after we got home! It was an out-patient procedure. The particulars probably depend on what kind of hernia you have, how big, etc. But hernia repairs are very routine for the medical people (not for you, of course), and if you need pain medication, they will no doubt make sure you have it. If you are super sensitive to pain, tell them that ahead of time. It should be in your chart if your sensitivity to pain is atypical (although some medical people don't understand this). One of my sons experiences pain somewhat atypically - heightened sensitivity to some and decreased sensitivity to other, so nothing is predictable. Either way, if you let them know ahead of time, they'll be prepared, and you're unlikely to be the first person they've dealt with who had similar issues -even if your "bundle" of issues is unique! Good luck!
