I see my AS as a set of gifts and disabilities. I would not want to give up the gifts, but I would love to find better ways of coping with the disabilities.

My therapist has been asking me lately to explore my definitions of "success" and "failure," and I'm realizing that my big problem is living up to expectations... my own and other people's. How am I supposed to know if my goals are realistic when all of my expectations are defined by an NT world? When I fail to achieve a goal, do I say, "Oh, that wasn't a realistic goal," or do I say, "I should try to go about this in a different way"?

I have an obvious physical disability, and many people just don't care. If your "disability" were easily spotted, people wouldn't just start helping you with everything and paying your bills. ADA or no ADA, I could starve to death, and the government wouldn't care. Don't think it's any better. Anyway, I like your writing, and you sound very gifted. I hope you come to accept yourself.
