If I can see the merit in copying another's behaviour or appearance, I might do that.

I also seem to unconsciously find myself being something of a chameleon. Some time ago I began spending a lot of time with a lady I liked, and noticed myself becoming very outgoing and sociable in general. That puzzled me as it seemed quite out of character for me to be like that, and I couldn't work out how I was finding such abilities, until I realised that she had always been outgoing and sociable. I'm sure now that it was a case of monkey see, monkey do, though while it was happening, I was completely unaware of that.

I don't know if I'd say I copycat, more like unconscious mimicry. Like I f someone has an accent (this happens alot when I'm watching tv) I'd pick up on it and unknowningly, until someone pointed it out, repeat it. When I was a kid my dad would get angry with me for putting on an American accent and I wouldn't even know I was doing it.

Now I will in my thoughts also pick up personalitys as well as accents if I like and fixate on a character on tv, as well as there accents. It feels almost like having a split personality except I can feel my real personality just sitting in the corner of my head quite fine to have company.

I copy speech....I often don't know "what to say" (don't wanna state what I think is obvious). so I copy smalltalk, hollow remarks etc.

Come to think of it, perhaps all my social interactions are "copy and paste"

Copy copy copy,

Oh man did I used to copy. It was my only way to identify with those around me. Copy that, and then I may find I actually can get through a conversation. At first I wasn't aware of the copying, then I noticed.

If I liked someone, I would copy some of their inflections, and sayings. I found my own sense of style by shifting mine with each person I met. Now I have built a style of my own. A melding of class and the 70's, with a little 60's thrown in there. My hair style is actually back to what it was in 3rd grade and in 9th grade. I realized that at those times, my hair was beautiful and very much me, so I am sticking with it. Hair style is subject to my clothes style on occasion, specially when I dress up.

Right, copy copy copy. Copy that maybe only a little anymore, when it is a great idea!

I was, as a kid.

First I copied my brother, when I got to another school I copied some of my classmates.

I dropped that habit when switching to just another school.

Now I am what I am and don't need that copycat thing anymore.

The only way that I could say that I 'copy cat' is in fashion. I have little to no fashion sense so I will look at what others are wearing (if I think it looks good) and attempt to create something similar. Still fails relatively well, though lol. Ah well.

I copied other kids in my school because I wanted to be like everyone else and thought that's how I am supposed to act. Then stopped when I was in my early teens but did it occasionally depending on what they were doing. But I still struggle trying not to get influenced by other people. If I hang around jerks, I start acting like one too and it takes lot of energy to not act like them but it slips after a while. I just try to be myself.
But I did copy my ex aspie play mate when I was 16 because I wanted everything my way so I thought if I had ODD too, things would go my way.

I also copied and mimicked phrases when I was little my mom says.

The TV show was called "Star Trek." You may have heard of it.

Ever since it became popular, I've come to loathe the show and the movies, and have contempt for the "Trekkies", of which I used to be one.

I should LOL at you for this, being a Warsie and all...but nah. Though I don't think Trekkies are that way NOT because it's popular, it's because they think it's cool 8)

So were you involved in Trek vs. Wars debates back in the day?

EDIT: also, yes I copy things. Apparently my speaking or typing style is influenced by *chan memes and speaking styles (I've heard that from people). That and me adding in chanspeak sometimes IRL.... On the other hand, my typing style was noted as autistic by someone on a forum I browse so its a mixture apparently.

Yes, I do this. Or did this. To the point of plagiarism, although I was never caught.

You can say i coppied all the social things i know.
the downpoint of it is that it costs much consentration to hold up the mask.
so people think im normal, and when im tired they get scared and start making jokes about me.

2ukenkerl, he thought I was just mucking about, doing it to get on his nerves. I don't know what kind of American accent it was, but I watched alot of Friends, so it was probably the accent they had.

Echo-LOL-ia copycatz topic

I went through that phase. :x "Real phony."

Doing the mimic thing can be scary/disturbing, if you think your individuality could be lost like being assimilated by the "Borg continuum." The HERD mentality.

Strange.

Edit: I was just thinking. Perhaps those of us on the Spectrum do the copy thing as a coping measure, and progress beyond it, once we are aware of our behaviour. :)
