Here's a little selection of stuff I've done over the years. I've not painted or drawn for a very long time now, but I still do a bit of photography now and then...

There's more here on my flickr page, though it's years since I've bothered updating it.

Those are really nice. I like that you tried a new technique in almost every photo. The paintings remind me of Kandinsky. Great work.

Thankyou :D
I used to worry a lot about not having a particular style or genre that I specialised in with my photography (aside from my aversion to photographing people!) I figured in the end that my real enjoyment comes as much from the process of intense looking and solving photographic problems as much as the end result. It's almost like a kind of "mindfulness"; it helps me to immerse myself in the visual world around me instead of being distracted by the anxious kinds of thoughts that make me become disconnected from my surroundings (de-realisation.)

Thankyou again! I did rather wear my influences on my sleeve when I was still painting; you're quite right, the"Blaue Reiter" artists, especially Kandinsky and Marc, have always been big favourites of mine. Kandinsky's ideas of the "composition" and "improvisation" were a big influence, as I was never very satisfied with my figurative work - as a musician, his ideas about the parallels between creating visual art and music have always had a very strong appeal. I also found that my training in engineering drawing seemed to interfere with my creativity whenever I tried to do figurative work. That's partly why I like the works that you have posted so much, you seem to have found a way to combine the precision of draftsmanship with creativity and expressiveness in a way that I never could.

Thanks. It's nice to hear since I've never taken any formal art training.

My profession is architecture. I'm an expatriate too, so I work for a Japanese company, but in the past I designed buildings on my own. Here's a house I designed 10 years ago. I was 21 at the time, but unfortunately fell ill during construction.

I see ... well, I never followed the rules, that's perhaps why I could keep being creative. I definitely think my training gave me an admiration for the clean line, though.

Yes, I moved here in September 2015, and I'm married to a Japanese citizen, so I'm "in it for life", I guess. Life here is mostly good, although it can be exhausting some times. The standards at work are very high, and work hours are long. On weekdays, I typically leave the house at 7:20, and return between 22:30 and 00:00. I'm working in a Japanese company so there are ones which are more accommodating to foreigners, but the bottom line is that you have to put in a ton of hours and effort.

Learning Japanese is also a marathon run. Since I work, and have to keep energy for the time spent with my spouse (a difficult combo), I don't have much time to study. I can get by in everyday life, but there's still a long way to go.

If you'd like to move here, I'd suggest investigating all these things in detail and ask yourself whether you think you can do it. I just came here naively and thought I'd adjust as I moved along. To some extent that has been true, but it's also been extremely tough at times.

I really like this a lot, domineekee. It's so edgy like you sculpted it, it's weighty and very solid. What do you call it?
