WrongPlanet isn't a democracy. The Moderators and Administrators are chosen by Alex. The Site Owner.

Alex is effectivley God on this site, you can't change that, so don't bother whinging and complaining about that.

It's his decisions that chose the Mods and Admins, and as he is God on this site, you have no say in the matter.

I've seen it with people of all sorts...An Authority figure makes a decision that someone doesn't like and up go the calls of "Abuse of power", it's pretty common...

I'm in a Star Trek email/IRC role play organization, that has a really extensive behind the scenes management setup, and the amount of political power plays, backstabbing, squabbling, whigning, fighting, sneakiness is quite astounding, and don't try to tell me "Oh, That's NT behaviour" cos I'm seeing right here! With Autistic people!

If it's not RobertN trying to push his political agenda, or Gun Totting Sean trying to get a rise out everyone with his comments, or Neant delivering a scathing sarcastic rebuke, it's Pikachu looking for some sort of conspiracy, or maybe whoever claiming they've had enough and want to leave..only to come back a few weeks later and do it all again...

Frankly I've grown tired of it, grow up and do something constructive Hmm?

GA is only 22 years old. and more mature and keen than i.

I agree, i an too new and don't know the stories or am i caught up on recent events that were not well recieived.
As usual i jump in with both feet, out of obsession.

I will not use slander, character attack, nor name call, again, or often, maybe to the best that i can. i would like the idea of a free-er place where censorship is not needed, but it is irresponsible to feel entitled to absolute freedom in someone elses home.

Thank you for your patience onn these matters.

And remember, i belive that 99 out of 100 instances, when you allow freedom tho reign in the marketplace of ideas the truth will be the victor.
I beleve it has, in this case, at least as far as my view point is concerned.

This part of your problem: you lot aren't consistent.

The Moderators are chosen by consensus amongst existing Moderators. A member is put forward, and their suitability discussed by existing Moderators. (The only exception is if Alex confers Moderator status). There are no “rules” as to who may be suggested.

You are, actually, an oligarchy (if I believe vetivert). So don't go blaming Alex to take the pressure off yourselves!

Yes, but members have been encouraged to make donations; and apparently do. So, I'd suggest if that's the case, the membership should have some say in things. Does that sound reasonable?

Of course, contributers may be rewarded with fast-track promotion to the moderator clique for all I know.

You completley misunderstood me..Though I'm not surprised, considering the entire point of this thread is too look for ways to attack the moderators.

Be we chosen by Alex or chosen by the current Moderators, my points was, that the general membership has no say in who the Moderators are or will be...So there is no sense whinging, bitching or moaning.

Your statement seemed clear enough. How am I supposed to guess what you mean, when you don't say what you mean?

You know, when people point out the obvious failings in a system, sometimes things get changed for the better. Would you agree?

Oh, and lets not get throwing the "A" word around willy-nilly. We wouldn't want any excuses for official warnings, would we? Anyway, at least you can't accuse me of thread-derailing, I suppose.

Do you believe moderators should be beyond criticism?

No, but whatever complaints should be brought up via PM rather than in public. I honestly believe that it is okay to criticise the government, as long as it is constructive criticism and not just flaming and insulting them without reasons backed up and properly supported by logic and other events.

The way I think of the moderators is kind of like the supreme court (of the US... for folks elsewhere, just bear with me). We all have our personal beliefs, but we're here to make WP better under the supervision of Alex. He has final say in whatever decisions are made, especially when it comes to the big ones. The moderators also check each others' decisions.

It is inevitable that people complain, but please do so over PM first. If I wanted to criticise the government, I would probably choose to write a letter or send of a signed petition to the congressmen rather than insult the government by calling the senators nasty names that I'm not going to say here. :|

This is getting really old and wasting energy on both sides. Can we go back to posting now? WP isn't some totalitarian regime to be tumbled.

What are you trying to start? A revolution?   Geeze, don't take it all so seriously.

ascan, whether or not you think your racist comment deserved a warning or not, you're getting off easy because you ALSO attacked two other members, and regardless that they were mods, you would have received AT LEAST one warning for the attacks since they occured so closely in succession. And possibly even two.

Potentially, you could have received 3 warnings. Why are you complaining? Just drop it. Please. This is just getting monotonous and my eyes are getting tired from rolling so much. There are better things the both of us could be doing...

Why? That means trusting a moderator to give the full details of the communication to other moderators. There's good evidence that doesn't happen.

For example, in chronological order over the period of a week:

ghotistix wrote:
This violates the forum guidelines on unacceptable behavior (racist language).

ghotistix wrote:
You're right about that one. It's not racism, and I apologize for the mistake. However, the warning still stands on your personal attacks.

BeeBee wrote:

vetivert wrote:

vetivert wrote:

That's what happens when you communicate with you lot via PM!

It's the best f*****g laugh I've had for a long while.

You want to know the truth, ascan? ghotistix made a mistake. As do ALL people including myself all to frequently and undoubtedly you, too. You're going on over something that WILL NOT CHANGE. The warning stands. Let's please move on because this is not a productive or enjoyable way to spend time. It's just fruitless rambling and pointless arguments and we're all tired.

Indeed. I have admitted to not behaving perfectly, but believe you lot do ask for it in the way you carry on.

This could have all been resolved quickly if you'd just explained exactly what I'd done wrong as your guidelines say you should.

You still haven't.

We did. It's just that you don't agree with them. So this argument will never be resolved. Your comments were racist and you attacked two members and therefore received a warning. What more do you want? The exact definition of racism? If you do, I can post a link to the Online Oxford Dictionary. Otherwise, I can't give you what you are asking because there is nothing to give.

Your two personal attacks on nirrti and myself were both offensive and aggressive. I can't offer you any more.

You've not demonstrated how what I said breached the above. Moreover, I've repeatedly asked for that to be done, to no avail. You've never explained, or attempted to, other than to say : "you've made racist comments".

As it's not clear cut (that's obvious from the PM quotes in my other reply), I think if you insist on sticking with the accusation you should satisfactorily explain it.

Edit: Oh, btw, vetiverts comment: "disparaging someone because of their ethnicity is racist"
isn't satisfactory. Because I obviously didn't do that.

You made flippant and potentially degrading and shallow comments about a minority. You didn't deny anybody voting rights, but NO FORM OF RACISM is allowed on WP.
