"Awareness," 70.3 series races, etc.
Last weekend I opened my multisport season at Miami International Triathlon. During the trip I visited a South Beach Starbucks I noticed that this Starbucks had sponsored the local Autism Speaks "Autism Awareness Walk" and was encouraging volunteers. This business earned a spot on my boycott list.
I don't know what walking around wearing a shirt has to do with raising awareness; to me it looks more like evangelizing cult memes.
Thinking back further at Ironman 70.3 Cancun there was a Canadian couple traveling the world participating in 70.3 Series to raise awareness for for brain injuries and testicular cancer. I remember seeing their apparel at the Expo. I don't remember if they displayed an easy to remember website.
Recently at my gym I saw a young woman who worked out while wearing an Autism Speaks local walk (Boston). It seems I'm being encroached by Neuronazis or otherwise lowbrow cults.
I can't help but think about raising awareness in a potentially more potent way--by example. There is much to be said for the chemistry that accompanies the autism spectrum (good and bad perhaps). I think it would be good if the Ironman races are saturated by self-advocates before the Neuronazis arrive.
Awareness month is coming up soon. My idea involves adding another dimension or two to awareness; but, my imagination is not fully developed.
My thoughts for now, subject to augmentation.
