I'm not really WORRIED, but I want to take precautions.

This whole thing has actually got me interested in pandemics, LOL...

P.S. the U.S. is stockpiling Tami Flu - a useless drug that does not anything. It's supposed to fight the flu virus and prevent you from getting sick, but by the time you get the symptoms, it's too late for the drug to have any effect. I recommend that all of us take one daily multivitamin a day.

This is blatantly false - tamiflu has been shown to be demonstrably effective against swine flu.

Swine flu is a curable illness; the deaths so far have probably been due to lack of adequate or prompt treatment, or a compromised immune system. Even in Mexico City, where the vast majority of fatalities have taken place, the total number of cases is tiny given it's a city of over 20 million. This isn't the Black Death.

Headline in today's local newspaper:

GLOBAL PANDEMIC IMMINENT

*sigh*

Yes, let's encourage hysteria and fear by a populace already on edge due to political and economic strife. Let's nudge our country a little further towards chaos. Good times.

*sigh* . . . . .

It will be a strong flue, more dangerous to old people and babies. You can probably avoid it at a farm inside south america, but there is no need of such drastic action.

Ah, the delay is very goog, it will be atenuated day after day. It will come back next year, and tha following one, buch each time weaker.

Honestly, the more it's hyped in the news, the less I care.

I just disinfected our entire house just in case.

I don't mean to sound paranoid, but I actually feel a bit ill, and it feels flu-like...

like alot of people have already said, dont watch the news. it will only scare you, and in all honesty the flu kills alot of people already. the media just needs something to report on for ratings. im also convinced the media is some sort of mind control device. i know this sounds silly but just look at what they can do, scaring people and all. desensitizing people to horror maybe? i dont know. they shure are good at panic though

If you’re worried, please read this:
1- The media is good at presenting things in a negative light. If you tend to be anxious, limit your intake of news. Get your information from reputable sources, where the hype is low. In the U.S., National Public Radio is a good source; it’s timely and intelligent, no scary headliners.
2- The definition of a “pandemic” is “occurring over a wide geographic area and affecting an exceptionally high proportion of the population”. Nothing in that says it must also be highly dangerous.
3- Think rationally. Consider the odds the swine flu has to overcome to get to you or your family. The flu has to beat a lot of odds to be a direct threat to you:

- First, it would have to prove to be highly life-threatening before it deserved much worry. If 1% of the people who get it die, your chances of living through it are pretty good, right? The really-bad 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic killed 2.5% of the people who contracted it.
- Second, it has to show up in your country and then your state/province
- Third, it has to then make it to your neighborhood/work/school
- Fourth, you have to come in close contact with someone who has an active case
- Fifth, even if you come in contact with an ill person, you won’t necessarily pick up an adequate dose of the virus to become sick.
- Sixth, if you’re taking precautions like washing your hands and avoiding large gatherings, you are reducing the likelihood of picking up the virus even further
- Finally, if you catch it, there are anti-flu drugs that are working very well. Just find medical attention within the first couple of days of having symptoms (fever, aches, sore throat, etc.) If you absolutely don’t have access to medical attention, follow the normal recommendations for flu; rest (stay home), drink plenty of fluids, take cough expectorants, see a doctor at your first opportunity.
- The odds are hugely in your favor that you’ll be fine. :)

The media stirred up the same hysteria about bird flu. When it never became a pandemic
they found other things to scare people with !

HYSTERIA sells papers.

Just remember:

Coughs and sneezes spread diseases
Catch them in your handkerchief.

Oh, and wash your hands regularly

I'd be more worried about MRSA which causes too many deaths, maybe if people are bit more attentive to hand washing this will have a knock on benefit.
