What do you think about self-diagnosis? were you ever self-diagnosed? As an autie without access to a professional diagnosis (money, family in denial, etc.) id like to hear what you guys think! (in this context, self diagnosed means someone who has thoroughly researched and decided that they are aut...

skibum- yes! It makes me so mad when NTs try to tell us how to say it, or when they assign PFL as the standard.

I am not changing the words I use for myself, even if they make non autistics uncomfortable. narratives about autism have centered around how it affects them for too long.

I agree, saying "person with autism" sounds to me like trying to separate something from a person that really can't be viewed independently. it also seems to portray autism as a disease, an ailment best cured (which I also don't support!) drlaugh, I'm not sure what that meant... could you ...

I've also had people tell me that I couldn't possibly be autistic because I'm "not that bad" at social situations. Like they don't know most of what I say is scripted and I can barely interact on most days! Eye contact is ridiculously hard, but I force myself to do it and be uncomfortable....

I've found that a lot of NT "autism parents" are actually woefully misinformed about autism!! I had to listen to a conversation where a mother talked about how people with autism have personalities and interests! Like, WOW! Did you know??? Autistic people are PEOPLE!! !! I actually heard o...

Mariella by Kate Nash has always resonated with me! "I'm heavy handed To say the least My mother thinks I'll be an awful clutcher 'Cause I spill things from stirring 'em too quickly I'm far too loud It's like, as soon as I've got an opinion It just has to come out I laugh at stupid things Just ...

I don't mind if people drink, but the constant mentions of alcohol in music and TV is really hard for me. I'm in AA (sober for almost a month!), and I'm finally seeing how prevalent it really is in the media. Seeing people constantly talk about drinking, especially people my age, makes it especially...

I've been thinking about this a lot. Do you prefer PFL (person with autism) or IFL (autistic person)? I know some people (allistics especially) will avoid using either and say "on the spectrum." But I want to know how you, individually, feel. Personally, I prefer to say that I'm autistic r...

My special interest lengths vary greatly! I've had ones that lasted a week to ones that have lasted years. I do think that at one point you will "settle down" with a SI, though it may not last as long as you'd like. You may have to find peace in not having one sustained special interest.

I'm nonbinary and use they/them pronouns, but I'm only out to people I know online (tumblr, not facebook) and a few friends. However, one of those friends keeps outing me, especially to large groups. For example, at easter she turned to me and said "so Luke (i don't actually go by Luke but let'...
