Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: What's happened now with volunteering? It's terrible.

This is absolutely my experience too. The trouble is that volunteering has become like internships, an increasingly sought-after/competitive pathway, for those who can afford it, ( working for free or just bed and board ), towards well-paid professional work. It has less and less to do with "pe...

Totally get this. Read a book recently that really helped me understand how and why this might be happening: "Consciousness and the Social Brain" by Michael Graziano http://www.amazon.co.uk/Consciousness-Social-Brain-Michael-Graziano/dp/0199928649/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=142...

I have only ever worn three pairs of jeans in my life, v soft pale blue flared ones in the late-70's with a low waist, a darker blue straight-legged pair v rarely a bit later, and a tight dull thinner-jean-fabric green pair quite a bit at Sixth Form and first year uni, but I always disliked how stif...

Yes, definitely! I think of it as being "age-queer". :) I don't think I really quite progressed past age 12 in many ways, eg. never quite grasped or mastered the "several-steps-long-term thinking" and acting; the fitting into social hierarchies, in working environments especially; understanding/"per...

Thank you very much The_Walrus and greenfivenine for those recommendations. I quite like the sound of Sheffield, and also the north, near Sunderland because that's where the Autism and Nutrition Research project is, though I'm rather afraid of how cold it's likely to be. Currently "studying" Birming...

Thank you very much for all the replies. Really appreciate it. :) Looks as if the worst that can happen is a long waiting list and/or huge waits between parts of the assessment procedure? Which I can see could be really really frustrating and tiring and inconvenient. But no total disaster stories so...

I definitely experience sensory shutdown to touch, when overwhelmed. I then simply feel little or nothing, ( except perhaps extreme pain, I don't know; it hasn't arisen ).

How would you know if someone has autism and ADHD, autism with ADHD features or ADHD with autistic features?

Very good question. I have that sort of mixture and don't know which I am most likely to be diagnosed as. :)

I can't really afford to move to London or its suburbs, so was wondering if there were any other areas where the referral and diagnostic process is fairly sympathetic and efficient. It does look as if funding/budgetary considerations play a pretty important role in whether a Health Authority bothers...

Thank you v much, Steel Maiden. :) I just found an ancient thread with two pointers, one to Surrey and Borders Health Authority, and the other to the London area in general, which would fit with your experience. :) Unfortunately I probably won't be heading for London, or Surrey, too expensive. :( I ...

Looking for advice/info/help here! :) I'm planning to move back to UK from France next summer, and one of my main reasons for doing so is to get an official diagnosis, ( probably Aspergers/Autism Spectrum or PDD NOS and/or ADHD ), and am trying to work out where would be best to live with that in mi...

I'm beginning to think that I'm more ADD than classic Aspergers/Autism Spectrum. The descriptions of ADD seem to explain more of me/my behaviour, the bits which AS didn't "quite" cover. I've just been reading a bit about it, and so so much of it rings bells with me. The opening post here does too. :...

What is odd is that the Malaysian military apparently knew from the beginning that the plane had taken a sharp turn, and tracked it as it flew intact/at normal speeds towards the West for over an hour/70 mins, last trace somewhere in northern Malacca Straits, and didn't tell anyone ( outside the cou...

You know what would be completely awesome? An AS friendly retreat, somewhere quiet. I'd imagine there's an audience for that product, either privately or through the use of public funds as a therapeutic device for helping people with AS recover from and/or deal with life crises. I'd go. Especially ...

I crashed and burned in 1989 - 90 aged 26, and the worst/most extreme and manic-depressive part of the breakdown lasted until Spring - Summer 1992 when I had a brief and weird out of body experience during which I seemed to see my body below me looking somehow like a beaten/battered/broken animal, a...

As someone else said, finding WP was a revelation and a relief. It didn't make me feel any less weird, but it explained it, so many things. :) And meant that I could talk about and work out stuff with other people which I had almost never been able to express or formulate, stuff which very very few ...
