I never finished my PhD.
But I'm alive. Mentally healthy enough. Struggling and coping person, not mismedicated suffering vegetable that resulted from my misdiagnosis.
I was lucky enough to get out of that crap but it left me wondering how many people didn't.

"If you want to live by your own rules, earn for your life yourself."
I'm an Aspie and I read such messages literally.

I was 17. Unemployable. I finished high school and studied at Uni in this strange, semi-homeless state.

It seems to me the percentage of homeless in the US being Asian or East Indian is really small. I think some of it is culture - preference to live severily overcrowded than on the streets. You asked (I know it wasn't directed at me) Have you ever been homeless? If so why? If not then why not? and I...

My misdiagnosis was largely based on something like this - the doc interpreted my summary of life history (like, PhD studies in theoretical physics) as delusions of grandiose and everything I said later was interpreted through these lens :/ I wouldn't say he was delusional - I would say he was dead-...

That's what I first suspected and then read about Asian Americans - before going homeless, they prefer to live in over-crowded, under-maintained but stable accommodations with their families. Homelessness is not the same all over the world. I was pretty shocked when I visited Buenos Aires and saw mo...

The law here states that the minimum area of an apartment is 25 m2 (269 square feet) but it does not state how many persons can live per square meter. Families living in single studios are quite common. We were living in the biggest room of an apartment shared with my grandmother and uncle. There ar...

Using a square footage calculator with my room being about 13' x 11' it's about 143 square feet. That's what I would call "a room". I grew up sharing little more (about 170-180 sq ft... maybe 200? Hard to tell with all the furniture but probably not) with my parents and siblings. But we c...

Structure of the real estate market is an interesting factor here. When Fnord wrote "even 400 square feet per person" as some low end housing space, my eyes sort of popped out. 400 square feet per person is a lot ! Way more than most of the people I know personally have, unless they're pa...

Yeah... I'm sorry, Znof. You give me an insight. The purposes of homes are safety and privacy. If a shelter doesn't offer more of them than a tent, there's no logical reason to choose the shelter. Here, homeless shelters fill in the winter and empty in the spring. They provide sufficient safety agai...

To all: I should also point out that a major cause of the housing crisis is the unaffordability of housing. And, here in the U.S.A., the unaffordability of housing (in any place where there are decent jobs) is caused to a large degree by restrictive zoning laws. Getting rid of single-family zoning ...
