One of the best things I've ever done for myself is spend 6 months working in retail (during the Christmas rush, no less). It was definitely outside my comfort zone, incredibly difficult for me, but it left me a far more confident person, able to make eye contact and communicate forthrightly with ot...

Generally when I'm tired, concentrating on something else, or if there's background noise. But not always. Sometimes it just happens at random. It's not consistent, though, and most of the time I hear what I assume is "normally."

Yes, I have this, yes, it's Audio Processing Disorder. And very, very annoying it is, too.

I've read that the symptoms start appearing around age 2 or 3. Complete bs, IMHO. I knew my son was on the Spectrum within a week of being born, and this before I had ever heard of AS or "the Spectrum". Well, there are exceptions to every rule. Just as some who say they know because their children ...

a PDA is an expensive piece of machinery! I'd hate to see him lose that! But I have an old one, that I'm not even using -- I might as well give it to him and see if he enjoys the computer/technology aspect of using it. That's not a bad idea, or you can get one of the Sharp ones (look in Target or S...

IIRC, Google Calendar will send you reminder text messages though? Those might only be once a day, however - I don't use it so I'm not so sure.

I am avoiding getting an official DX because it goes on a medical record. Amen to that. So while it is unlikely insurance will refuse you because of AS, they will certainly make you pay more than you should. I'm afraid you're incorrect here. Most insurance companies will now refuse to insure privat...

Do most aspies feel as if they are failures? Do most aspies feel as if they can NEVER fulfill their parent's hopes and dreams for them? Well, I have no need for my parents' hopes and dreams. I have my own life, and what they want/expect from me is really irrelevant. That I live 7,000 miles away hel...

Schizophrenia was my first thought, too. The thing which immediately struck me, though, was that he started off thinking about doing marijuana, then started hearing voices. An extremely uncommon side effect of cannabis is that it can, in those with a predisposition, provoke schizophrenia. The amount...

I have to say I'm really surprised you didn't pass on your son's condition before you saw the doctor - that's one of those things where I'd expect a parent to tell the receptionist, and probably also ask for a quiet room away from the waiting area if he's sensitive to noise/chaos. The doctor may hav...

Well, I guess it's a start. 40% is a pretty awful number, but that'll improve. Where I see the value in this is the potential for the future. You have to start somewhere, if we can reach 95% plus, and an affordability that allows testing of all infants, this could be incredibly useful - you could ge...

Zendell, did you actually read the article? No, of course you didn't. The facts would have interfered with your soapbox. Can't have those pesky facts get in the way of your fantasy! Had you read the article, you would have discovered that the study was looking at whether there was a different level ...

First up, remember everyone's an individual and we're all different, with different expressions of the differing parts of Asperger's. (Which is to say, despite Inventor's assertion you shouldn't invite us to parties, I quite like parties.) How do I get through the day? As best I can. I think ...

They let him take a medical withdrawal and then after a year he can go back or he can go anywhere now. Not a bad deal, it could have been much worse. That seems more than reasonable. It's more lenience than I would have granted. At the risk of reopening a discussion, I do want to take issue with th...

Mostly I can tune these things out, but I know what you mean. My sister always had more sensory issues than I did, but I think things have swung the other way, now (as with much, I think increased levels of exhaustion have an effect, everything gets harder). Lawnmowers and leafblowers irritate me so...

There's actually been close to 50 studies on gluten and casein in autism that can be found at http://www.autismndi.com/news/default.asp?content=Resources&show=Studies although the CDC may be the first that is double-blind if they can really accomplish that. The problem is that placebo effect is...
