Lack of empathy is a very common misperception (with a jadded history), so what does the "theory of mind" concept mean in practice and why do so many autistics have very intense emotional empathy when NTs are told we have no empathy? Also, there is a lot of lack of understanding about sens...

The US medical system is very problematic. However, I hope no one takes this as a reason to not donate blood. Blood is generally only collected on a donation-basis in the United States. Let's hope it stays that way because I certainly do not want poor people exploited to sell their blood to the gene...

I understand metaphor, simile, idioms, etc. but I think much of this is because of my special interest in literature. I realized at a point that I was overteaching my children idioms that they just "got," whereas I had to do a special study to understand the meaning of.

Hi. This does not describe me, but I want to validate that it is ok to be a "loner." There is so much pressure to be a social creature but we are not all social. The nonfiction book "A Stranger in the Woods" by Michael Finkle is an excellent and insightful exploration of a person...

Hi. I am seeking an assessment for autism. I have recently heard that in my community, due to one year+ waitlists for adult assessments, there is a way to fast-track diagnosis by preparing a very thorough and organized self-assessment of autistic traits and examples of how one fits into them or not....

Hey, thanks! About 10 minutes after I saw your post, there was a women's online meetup through Square Pegs. I was able to attend and have very good connections with a few people. I'll keep up with these resources to try to find more friends and mentors. One very strange part of this experience is to...

This is a helpful, in-depth perspective, Mountain Goat. My bipolar diagnosis is based on two, 15-minute assessments conducted 25 years apart. The first was an emergency diagnosis in my youth when I experienced one manic episode after starting antidepressants. The second was based on that faulty, his...

Hey there. Here's my perspective as a lawyer and former ADA coordinator. First, you don't have to disclose anything, it's up to you. One thing about Autism is it can make cause us to be a too trusting, too optimistic that the "logical" events will follow from an event, so I have personally...

Hello. I'm not really into forums - sometimes start but never follow up - but I'm trying to connect to other Autistic people and don't have a good way to do that in my local community. So here I am, I'll really try to reply and make some connections. I have been exploring whether I am Autistic for a...
