Autism is a cluster of traits, some good, some bad, some neutral. I can see some having a better mixed hodgepodge than others. For me, I also get hyperfixations so intense that they send me into hypomania, and possibly full on mania. Like, legit. The kind of thing you see in bipolar disorder. (I'm n...

Doesn't help that ASD involves difficulties we don't know how to explain until we learn about our own condition, and sometimes not even then. Before I understood what sensory processing disorder was (it's part of the diagnostic criteria for ASD), I had no way to explain that sometimes I would feel s...

Sidenote, I actually do not see going on disability as a failure, or failing.

I see it as a means to an end. I rather think I can be more successful and happy in life and can pursue the stuff I actually want to achieve.

I recently was in the ER due to an anxiety attack pushing me into dangerous levels of blood pressure. They had to give me Ativan to bring my heart rate down. My anxiety was extreme from October to mid January. I'm back on meds prescribed for anxiety. Mine is an antipsychotic, anxiety is an off-labe...

I "lost" my job in December due to store closure. But I had been at my wits end with the job since September anyway. If we weren't going to close, I would have quit. I reduced my hours gradually, going down 3 days, then going down to 1 day. Goal was to stay on until the end so that I quali...

The thing is, it's not easy to accept that you're actually disabled by your disability. Like, sure, I can say "autism is a disability". And like, that status exists to protect me, it exists to protect you, it exists to protect autistic people. It means you have access to legal protections ...

:-? Apparently some parts of the U.S. government think Autism is curable! " This Wisconsin man with autism was 'devastated' after Social Security told him to pay back $35K. Is the system broken? " I'm diagnosed A S D - 1 with an additional note I satisfy the criteria formerly associated w...

I didn't see ASD as a disability until the disability aspect of it slammed me in the face. I'm not "level 3", but my symptoms are such that working a job is bad for my health due to tendency to fall into severe burnout, in addition to diabetes and other chronic health conditions, etc. That...

The two attitudes seem highly related to me. I am hard pressed to think of a reason to be anti immigration that is not rooted in some form of racism.

I have two siblings. One is also diagnosed autistic. (The other is ADHD, and I don't know about ASD for him.)

Pretty sure my mom is also autistic, and I believe my grandmother was as well.

I don't. I think I at minimum need a pet with me because I freak out easily. But I do live with my mom and, for now, my sister.

I worked for 5 1/2 years and now am applying for disability because working is bad for my health. Mostly due to the sensory processing issues that come with autism, but other factors as well.

It would be very different, as Autistics lack the herd instinct that is at the root of most NT behaviour. Rationally, there's no reason why individuals should be considered objects of fear and loathing, just because they are "not like us". To be honest this isn't my experience with autist...

There are more of us than people think there are.

But we are not the majority.

Also, we just tend to end up finding each other since minds that are similar tend to get along better. (Sometimes.)

We do tend to be slower than others, but that's okay. The point of life isn't to race towards goals. For many people, their goals are a job, a career, maybe to marry or have kids and a family. But not everyone wants or can handle that life. And that's not bad. I am finding out that I'm basically una...
