Forum: Social Skills and Making Friends   Topic: Behavior modification therapy for better social skills?

Simple question: Anybody tried behavior modification or some other therapy to improve their social interaction skills? What were the results and your opinion of the experience? Of the few people I've talked to about being aspie, to a person, they've all strongly recommended some type of therapy. In ...

You might be right, but I really don't think I come across as guarded. I miss more nonverbal cues than I notice (a huge problem in and of itself), so maybe (probably, definitely...) I'm sending some that I don't realize. But I still try to avoid doing or saying things that might be too challenging t...

Believe me I try. But apparently what I think (or what my gut thinks) are obvious signals usually turn out to be invisible to most people.

Not being overtly touchy, or chatty, or able to fake a good smile don't help any. That's for sure.

I don't date much. At least not in the sense that I get past first dates. But I try pretty hard and I've noticed a definite pattern. Out of 10 women I meet that I'm initially attracted to I might make an effort to get to know one of them better and try to get a date (this number is way up over the l...

Lots of things I'd like to respond to here.... Not all on topic, but I'll hit them in order. richardbenson, Are you a jeweler/artist? I haven't run into too many people who even know what fire agates are. TobyZ, Thanks for that link! Very useful. Callista, That's the best way to verbalize what I've ...

Your profile says "not sure if I have it or not" Yeah, that's what I entered the first time I visited the site at the beginning of my period of self discovery. Maybe I'll get around to changing my profile to a more affirmative opinion some day. The only thing I don't have is an official diagnosis. ...

So I don't generally share information about myself with others. But I have one very old friend who I've tried and tried to explain Aspergers to and get her to understand how it affects me. Her reaction is about the most troubling thing I've ever run into though. First of all, she refuses to see Asp...

Maybe somebody has covered this (I skipped the last few responses, sorry). The big down side to these tests is that you can intentionally or unintentionally slant the results. I was very wary about that when I took the test, and that's why I only took it once. I know too much now to be objective. Wh...

I have been told I have artistic talent, but art is a grueling task for me. I am too focused on detail and perfection. The entire process makes my head hurt and when I look at the finished product; all I can do is to pick at what I see to be imperfections. I had to give it up long ago. I can apprec...

I've been wondering how many of us have artistic skills? I'm an ex-professional jeweler (and a damn good one due to my attention to detail and focus), but it almost seems counter intuitive to me that this would be normal though.

So who else has any artistic drive, skills, or an outlet?

I think that we're just more attentive/sensitive to what our senses pick up. NTs can unconciously filter stuff out that we tend to get distracted by. I've had my hearing tested throughout my life at regular intervals and it is very good (I've made a point to protect it though), but its by no means s...

Yup, Pitch black and total silence. Anything else will keep me awake no matter how tired I am. I've slept during the day one time that I can remember, and in that case I had been awake for something like 55 hours and I still had to cover my eyes to get to sleep for 3 hours.

Oh I've got a great smile when it's natural.... The problem is that my natural smiles are few and far between... Too few for the rest of the world. I've been trying to change that conciously just to improve the way I mesh with the rest of society (say what you want about being yourself and not worry...

There you go talking dirty again! (not that it's not entertaining  ) I know what you're saying about bad luck with the wrong age/orientation. I live in a small town which doesn't have a specific "gay" bar. But one of the local dives is sort of the unofficial hangout. It's the local, redneck, c...

If my own experience is anything approaching normal for aspies, I do pretty well once I'm in a one-on-one situation (like dancing in the bedroom). It's when the public situations where I start locking up. I get distracted, self concious, and basically go into sensory overlaod from the loud music and...

I like it allot especially in a privet setting. And in your p.j. would be a nice tou...
