As young as a three-year-old is, a lot happens to a child in those first three years, and they are very formative years. I'd be very, very careful about ascribing her behavior to ASD. It could very well be a result of her traumatic early childhood. RAD often presents in ways that can look like autis...

You mention that your daughter is adopted. Was she adopted at birth, or recently? If she was adopted as an "older child," do you know anything about her early childhood history? Children who have disrupted early childhood situations may be dealing with reactive attachment disorder (RAD) or post-trau...

Oh dear. I grew up in a household where grades were very important, although nothing was ever laid out quite so blatantly. With my children, I have never been terribly grade oriented, and neither have they. We always valued learning above grades, and how people treat each other above everything else...

Since we don't know your parents, we can't really assess how they would respond to your disclosure. As a parent, I would want to know - I would, of course, feel many emotions - guilt, sadness, helplessness, etc. But, as DW said, those are my issues, not my child's, and they should not interfere with...

Babies of less than 7 weeks have been seen to suck their thumbs for comfort. I have to wonder where you get your information. At 7 weeks, an embryo is just starting to form the paddle-like formations that will eventually become fingers. It is just starting to develop a mouth. It is only a half an i...

Just because you consider a few cells, that you would not recognize as human if you were to see them, to be the equivalent of a person who is here on earth and can breathe and eat without having to get those essentials of life through another human being's body, doesn't mean everyone else agrees wit...

robo37: You're 18 years old, and you're male. Between your youth and your gender, you have little or nothing to add to a conversation about the thoughts and feelings of a rape victim who becomes or might become pregnant as a result of the assault she has suffered. Once you have been through the expe...

I have been identified as a gifted child ever since elementary school, but I'm wondering if I may have Asperger's as well. I fit practically every symptom of it - difficulty with social interaction, obsessive interests, having routines that must be followed, very sensitive perception, and intense f...

As a child, I had a speech disorder: I couldn't pronounce the R or the S. Anyone had a similar problem? Is it part of autism? This is a very common speech disorder, and is not necessarily due to autism. Usually, when people refer to speech issues related to autism it is more communication related, ...

Yes. I became a grandmother when I was 47. That was quite a while ago. I still don't feel like that's possible! I feel like I'm in my early 30's, maybe (I'm in my 50's). Certain music brings me way back ... and my self-image is definitely closer to young adult than to GRANDMOTHER!! ! LOL!

When my children were younger, there were certainly things we didn't do because one or another of the children couldn't handle doing it. We didn't necessarily think of it as being because the child was "disabled," but because the child was the child. Now that the children are older (older teen throu...

Is their primary concern that you spend time with them, or that you spend time with someone? Many NT parents of ASD children are concerned about their children's apparent isolation. I also couldn't help but wonder whether your parents have any other children - as a parent of older teen and young adu...

Before you decide not to speak to a psychologist about these issues that are concerning you, it would be a good idea to find out whether your fears about the therapy being "used against you" are realistic. Not knowing where you live, I can't hazard a guess. Here, in Pennsylvania, the mee fact that s...

Again, depending on his needs, there's Beacon College, in Florida. It's for kids with learning needs; I'm not sure how they would be for Aspergers.

This really depends on what kinds of supports your son needs. If your son has no academic needs, Landmark may not be the right place for him, since it is really geared toward students with learning differences, not autism, or social/communication differences. You need to be very clear about what kin...
