We use a social story - http://leechbabe.wordpress.com/2008/08/17/dentist-social-story/ Also we visit the dentist every 3 months and I count it as a success if my girls just sit in the chair. Our dentist has said we can come in anytime for the girls to spend time getting comfortable with the noise /...

Mr Potatohead wouldn't feel right, I've noticed that Heidi goes for food with a similar feel - eggplant, capsicum, hardboiled eggs... they are all kind of soft and squishy. Eggplant and the capsicum also have a very smooth surface, not sure about egg shells. I'm thinking a smallish satin pillow migh...

We do the same thing with the backpack aurea.

I really like that weighted pillow with the fidget ribbons. Might have to see if I can do something similar.

Beads, necklaces, buttons (and jars to put them in) or Barbie doll shoes, my youngest just loves little things.

For the oldest it is twirling her hair with her fingers.

Heidi adopted an eggplant again this week but I think I found a good solution:

Both my girls very much need to be alone when they get overwhelmed like that. I've learnt through my mistakes to walk away which just goes against every instinct I have, I want to hold them and make it better, solve the problem there and then. Usually they are in their bedroom, lights off is often b...

It will get picked up sooner or later and the parents will probably hate whomever picks it up. That is so very true. It was at my youngests 18month health check with the Maternal and Child Health Nurse that I first heard the word 'Autism' applied to my child. We never saw that health nurse again. N...

My 6yo daughter is going to be doing some cognitive behaviour therapy using the Tony Attwood book on anxiety management: http://www.amazon.com/Exploring-Feelings-Anxiety-Cognitive-Behaviour/dp/1932565221 My daughters counsellor is going to be working through the book with her. I think as long as the...

I sure hope it is just imaginative play. She was using boxes the other day as ski's with another box as her helmet. We've got plenty of plastic food toys and lots of dolls of a variety of textures... all these toys get neglected in favour of the food. Today I managed to get the fruit and veg deliver...

This is my greatest fear for my oldest daughter who has only recently been diagnosed with AS. The school counselor / shrink yesterday cornered me and attacked the AS diagnosis (and myself) because she didn't beleive there was anything wrong with Annie. I said there is nothing wrong with her, she jus...

My HFA 4yo Heidi has been adopting food as her babies. At first it was kind of cute. Our fruit and veg delivery would arrive, Heidi'd select something (often eggplant) and it would be her baby, she wraps it in blankets, cuddles it and loves it. Then she goes to do something else and I whisk it away ...

My youngest was recently interviewed by ABC TV program Catalyst about her 'Finger Friends' both her hands have names, personalities and she plays lots of games with them. It is incredibly helpful - especially getting her to try new foods or play with new toys, Alice and Oosie her finger friends are ...

We've never had very good time on school holidays but I realised over our summer holidays this year (Dec-Jan here in Australia) that the problem was lack of schedule. So over our most recent two week break I made a picture schedule for the two weeks of holidays plus first week of school term - so th...

We talked to Annie today and I think it went pretty well. She cried for a while and denied she had autism because she could speak. We read the book 'All Cats Have Aspergers' and Annie related to much of it. We talked about how it is okay to think differently and how this sometimes makes her smarter ...

Maybe you should have started younger.. I can't remember learning what death was or not knowing about it, I think my parents made me aware of it from the beginning. makuranososhi has a really good point. Death is everywhere in nature, and you can see it clearly in plants pretty much anywhere. I thi...
