It's a step in the right direction to recognise and avoid such black-and-white thinking, and not to read it into each other's contributions here, but we're still left with the difficult task of measuring the balance - how right or wrong was Freud, and how much good or damage has he done to the ment...

The Victorian middle class is remembered as being extremely sexually repressed, and I think there's some truth in that, but I don't think it was as universal or intense as the stereotype suggests. Contrary to the popular myth, they didn't cover chair legs out of sexual embarrassment. . I know this ...

True, this seems like a leap of faith, But here's the genius of Freud. We already know VIctorian era Europeans were horribly sexually repressed, Masturbation was considered ungodly and against biblical scripture. Thus Freud was perhaps reading the boys mind. The boy likely was at an age where he wa...

... anarchists typically deploy violence and terrorism. Actually, no. Some anarchists "deploy violence and terrorism," but many do not. There were quite a few anarchists in the district I lived in at one time, and they were among the most peaceful people I've ever met in my life. I was su...

There was a Jews Against Genocide rally in my old home town (Sheffield, England) a few days ago. I was glad to see that was happening.

They aren't even Fruit Loops. They're called FROOT LOOPS. Yes that's really teaching kids to spell, he said sarcastically. I'm sorry to play devil's advocate and to appear to side with the conservatives, but I hate mainstream cereal boxes, and would feel violated if I had to live in a home that had...

Customer service employees are treated as almost subhuman by much of the public and I'm not sure why I figure it's because people are insecure and unhappy with their own lives and they can get away with mistreating customer service employees. I expect there's a lot of truth in that, but I also thin...

I've got a history of accidentally banging my head on things and getting minor injuries to my hands. Usually it's caused by my sudden, impulsive movements. I've learned to be a bit more careful (Pavlovian conditioning I guess), but as I write this I can see 2 small cuts on my hands. I suppose anothe...

I tend to do my best at a task or to not do it at all. But my thinking style is very nuanced, and so is my talking style a lot of the time. I remember not liking the idea that questions rarely have correct, black-and-white answers when they told us that at school, probably because I could see that i...

I'm certainly risk-averse most of the time, and I see myself as having the coping strategy of defensive pessimism - carefully analysing the dangers of an endeavour and putting a lot of effort into reducing those dangers, rather than doing this "I'll cross that bridge when I come to it." So...

If you are looking for someone who gets deep into the weeds but from a consistently academic / dispassionate (or at least only gets really animated when he's illustrating some unusual point) is John Vervaeke. He's also at University of Toronto where Peterson used to work, he's a 4E cognitive scienc...

I suppose Freud would have interpreted the little girl's symptom as some kind of sexual hangup. . I don't think this is true. Sexual factors were only one of the characteristics Freud used in his theories (albeit a strong one) but there are other traits he linked to personality. We'll never know if...

I will say this, for Jung I don't think Jordan Peterson does a terrible job with his concepts and if you ever want to get the high-level from professionals there's a Jungian analyst couple, Steve and Pauline Richards have a channel titled 'Jung to Live By' on Youtube (typically coordinated by a gra...

the notion that free will doesn't exist can be arrived at by many routes other than by studying Freud, the simplest to me being the one I described on page 2 of this thread, i.e.: "the positions, velocities, etc. of every particle in the universe depends on their prior positions, velocities, e...

Well, the "id" may work for you, but not particularly well for me. I'm happy enough with the notion of unconscious motivation. As for Jung, I don't think I've ever understood a word of the stuff by him that I've seen. Some people's stuff just doesn't readily map onto what I already know, ...

One thing I know Freud got right is the concept of 'id'. I agree that there's unconscious processing - for one thing I've noticed its results many times in myself - but I don't particularly assign its discovery to Freud because it was a known thing both during and way before Freud's lifetime. Frank...
