Welcome!
I am in Virginia too (Blacksburg). I am not an Aspie, but I'm married to one and I have an 8 year old with Aspergers. I hope you find this a soft place to fall. :

we are going through the process of applying for a service dog for our Aspie son. We find out next week if he is accepted into the program. One of the things that really stuck out to me was that she said when matching the kids and dogs that there are dozens of times where they thought they would mak...

he is definitely a "deep pressure" kid. A weighted blanket or I have even laid on top of him in really bad meltdowns and it helps a great deal. It would be great to teach a dog to do this.

Thankfully, he does not get violent so I think he could really respond to this.

I would say he needs help with: deep pressure redirection unconditional affection in a meltdown (he is non-violent, but doesn't like to be spoken to during a meltdown) currently, his 2 year old sister is like the "Aspie-whisperer" and can calm him down like no one can with simple touch and innocent ...

We are in the process of getting a service dog for our Aspie son (he is 8). He struggles greatly with meltdowns and anxiety. I was wondering what skills specifically we should ask the handlers to teach our dog that would help him? Does anyone have experience with this and what has helped them in a m...

The funny thing about Disney is that we know it really well, been there a dozen times. Not since he was 4 though. Even with all our knowledge and planning there were a few Aspie things I just could never have accounted for like: --the smells. certain places in the park, we just could not go because ...

He loves star wars and legos. So we thought the Star Wars stuff at Disney would win him over. We also went to the cool new lego store, but that proved to be also too overwhelming.

this is a really tough one that we have struggled with greatly over the last few years.... Before this year, if we wanted our 7 yr old ASD son to VBS, one of us was with him the whole time. The problem with this is that he never really engages with the group, activities, etc, because he uses us as t...

We have learned the hard way what is a BAD or non-vacation for our 7 year old Aspie son. We went to Disney World and we knew it would be difficult for him, but thought the things he was really looking forward to would out -weigh this (Star Wars, pool time, fireworks) We were wrong. I totally admit i...

Do you know where in NoVa you will be stationed yet? This will make a big difference in schools. It would be fairly impractical to look at schools in certain areas because the traffic would make it difficult. I grew up in Springfield. I would start by contacting this group: http://www.poac-nova.org/...

This is just me personally - before accepting an ADHD diagnosis, I would request the doctor do actual tests rather than have people fill out questionairs about observed behaviors. There are all kinds of physical tests the doctors can do that check for ADHD. As far as medication, it is pretty straig...

OK, so I have a 6 year old son with Aspergers. The question of a co-morbidity of ADHD has always lingered out there with us and his ped. neurologist. We have always taken the stance that we are neither pro or con on the medication issue, we just want to equip him with what he feels helps him the bes...

my son had OT from 2 until now. He was very delayed in motor skills (walking, talking, pincher grasp, etc.) Most of his OT was focused on sensory issues (playing with playdough, learning brush techniques, wrapping him in blankets, etc.) It helped with balance and fine motor stuff. To him he felt lik...
