I did the ADOS and scored into the autism domain. I think that the examiners are looking for a good big sample of your language and communication, so when they ask you to describe brushing your teeth or to tell a story from the book without words, they're looking for clues about the way you communic... |

I know. It is a lot of money. I'm sorry it's so hard. I was unemployed at the time and had it half price which was £500 a few years ago. I had a savings account set up for my when I was born and I completely drained that. I'm happy with what those savings ended up being for. But in your case, perhap... |

I found it impossible to get an assessment on the NHS. I tried for three years. I saved up to pay privately at the Hoffmann Foundation for Autism in London. They were excellent. |

Yes, I have this. I think it's a natural human reaction some people have. Feelings aren't always logical. We know there's no logic in being angry with someone for being hurt or unwell - they can't help it - but the feelings happen anyway! When someone we know or love is vulnerable to an illness or i... |

AS is too complex to be summarised. It won't fit into some witty word play. |

Well, I'm female and have AS and I'm married to a man without AS. So, some people look beyond the diagnosis. But even those who don't initially, may well do over time, when they get to know us better and drop their preconceptions. |

So glad I'm not alone in this. I can really relate. Some how, a person becomes part of the fabric of your universe and it's really difficult. What makes it even harder is that, to people who haven't experienced the autistic intensity of the special interest, the obsession can seem like a crush, as t... |

Ah cool. Thanks. It sounds as though the deconstruction and analysis of social interactions is not an exclusively AS occurence. I wondered if is was because the people I know without AS seem to hop from social interaction to social interaction without exhaustion, whereas I need time to analyse and d... |

Question for NTs: Do you deconstruct and analyse your social interactions in order to understand them? E.g. If I go home from a social gathering at 10pm, I'll be awake 'til at least midnight analysing the day's interactions. I'll consider, for example: How were the things I said received by others? ... |

I vote for brilliant and hilarious character. I guess that, whether intentional or not, Sheldon comes across as a caricature of a person with AS. Because caricatures are exaggarated and distorted depictions, they can be perceived as humorous or offensive. In fact, have learned from Big Bang Theory! ... |

I experience this to a much lesser degree but I can relate. I liken it to when my computer's hard-disk light is on almost constantly, showing it is processing in the background. At those times my computer runs more slowly and less efficiently in other areas of functioning. During the times when I'm ... |

Same sort of story here. To relax, I catagorise my special interest which occupies my mind and creates order. I often watch a DVD or something at the same time - it's not always enough on its own. Alcohol makes me focus, but it also gives me a big tummy, which has taken years to get rid of. Don't ge... |

It's reassuring to here I'm not alone with this issue! I sometimes explain that because social interaction is a conscious cognitive task for people with AS, rather than a natural instinct, that conversations use a considerable amount of 'brain space' before we even get to the topic of conversation. ... |
