There’s a beautiful logic to some of that; for instance, ascribing individual differences to the introvert/extrovert dichotomy - since everyone must be either one or the other - while introducing a separate element (social anxiety disorder) to account for the withdrawn reputation of Aspies. However...

Of course it's possible. I'm one of 'em. The idea that Aspies are naturally socially withdrawn, quiet, anxious, etc. is probably only the result of the common social anxiety disorder many people with AS also have. The anxious social withdrawal is probably not a component of the Asperger's at all. O...

No, I am not superstitious, I don't do anything to make sure. And to answer the previous question (about public schools), I would decrease the level of bureaucracy needed to become a teacher, encourage more equitable ways of measuring student achievement, institute an increased emphasis on important...

If by bore you mean “to pierce (a solid substance) with some rotary cutting instrument,” then yes, all the time. If you mean “To make weary by being dull,” then I‘ll note that, in my experience, people often display a romantic preference for those who exhibit signs of being intelligent in a nerdy way.

Best of luck. High School is one of the last times in your life where you’re put in a situation where everyone is ostensibly at the same level. That’s not to say that it’s the same for everyone in practice, but everyone is kind of on equal footing in the sense that they’re supposed to have a fair sh...

Great list. I'd say that Back to the Future virtually has to be on there. Eighties, silly, good. Other considerations: Spaceballs vs. Airplane? Should there be two Indiana Jones and Star Wars picks? Is E.T. of more than historical interest? Other movies which stand out as being particularly eighties...

Sir Not Appearing in This Film.

Or 'the Best Friend,' although my being cast in this part would be widely criticized and cause all parties involved much embarrassment, especially myself.

Or the Unattainable Pretty Girl' for some reason.

In a very limited sense, that sums up Asperger’s. It’s certainly is true of me, and unfortunately for Wrong Planet this disparity is evident when it comes to posting on forums as well. I would note that apparently I can be more articulate at some times than others (this according to various observer...

1. When I’m alone and I’m vexed, I exclaim “Murphy Brown!” 2. I used to have recurring dreams of “Roseanne.” 3. I never lose my temper. 4. I set aside two weeks each year to drink a lot of hot chocolate. 5. I think Greek tragedy is currently undervalued, and people should get over Shakespeare. 6. My...

When I was first reading about Asperger’s I came across something saying that Aspies are often considered highly intelligent underachievers, and that seems more or less consistent with my high school career. I have a high IQ, but more significantly I have a very strong memory and am particularly ade...

I think you bring up interesting phenomena, but I also think things are less black-and-white than you have presented them. I think we're all different. I would LOVE to see a brain scan of myself to see how it compares to other people's (men, women, people in vegetative comas, chimpanzees, whatever)...

Amtrak trains are okay, so long as it's not a long trip. Three or four hours on a train is okay, perhaps even enjoyable for its novelty, but something like eighteen hours is masochistic and ill-advised. I used Amtrak for a couple of trips to and from college, and after a few hours the lack of privac...

My approach to this sort of question in my own life is that there are two explanations, and it’s impossible to discern which one is more appropriate. One the one hand, you could say that the social skills neurotypicals spend so much time honing are really distractions from more important things. Bea...
