OP: If you're having side effects only when it's starting to wear off, ask your doctor if there's an extended release version that he can prescribe. As for me, I've been on antipsychotics, and they made things worse--I would either be in a zombie-like haze, or I'd be hurting myself in order to be ab...

We have a lot in common with other developmentally disabled people. I don't like the idea that "pure autistics aren't actually intellectually disabled at all"--many of us are; some aren't, some are even gifted. Whatever one's level of intellectual ability, it's common on the spectrum to ha...

Sometimes people tell you you're being dense or things are flying over your head. A kind NT may be willing to "interpret".

I often do. I know it's not a rational feeling, but I've been told my whole life that I'm not nearly as important or worthwhile as anyone else, and that kind of thing tends to sink in with repetition. Logically, an autistic person is not a "burden". Prejudice against autistics is a burden....

We were just studying this in my thinking and problem solving class. The error your co-workers made is actually rather understandable: The penguin is a bird--but it's not a very typical bird. When we categorize things, we associate each category with "typical" traits. So with "bird&qu...

Appendectomies. As a toddler I played doctor with my dolls and they all had appendectomies. :)

I never actually wanted to have an appendectomy--I still have my appendix as an adult. I was more fascinated with surgery and medicine itself.

My hand-flapping is kind of a full-body bounce, and I'm holding up my arms and my wrists and fingers are loose, so that my hands sort of bounce up and down. The first photo, of the little boy being photographed outdoors, is kind of how it ends up looking. It must be pretty individual, though. Hands ...

Nothing sticks out to me. I don't think you made any mistakes--it was probably on the other person's end. He may not have felt like he wanted to meet anybody; he may have been busy, sick, ashamed... it could be anything. He could've had a huge social anxiety attack and backed out. It's his decision ...

Obviously content warning for murder, police, prejudice against trans people... I'd like someone who's actually transgender, or at least really close friends with a trans person, to check this article I wrote for my autism memorial page to make sure I'm doing it right. You'll have heard Kayden Clark...

I honestly haven't felt particularly rejected here. I just mostly got involved with the memorials, so I drifted toward scouring the news and various databases and away from posting on WP so much. I'm still active in autism rights, as always :)

Do you prefer autistic or person with autism? Autistic. Autism isn't something I carry around with me; it's an intrinsic part of my identity. It's a word that describes me. Do you mind if others say person with autism rather than autistic? (This is not when people insist on person with autism, but ...

Many autistics do live independently, earning their own keep. Many are married and have children. The "Parenting" forum here on WP has a lot of autistic parents, parenting autistic children. Or occasionally autistic parents with NT children, which is generally more confusing. Others live s...

Yes, it's not as bad as pre-WWII Germany, thankfully. And Americans as a people are more individualistic and less authoritarian than Germans were back then. So I don't think it would be another Holocaust, but I do think that here and there, people would die, and a lot of people would be treated unfa...

I just hope the Republicans get themselves a candidate who's a decent human being. As an independent voter, I like to judge candidates based on their skills as politicians, and I'd hate to have to use a criterion like "Anybody but Donald Trump". That said, if Hillary Clinton gets the Democ...

I'd like to raise awareness for the problem of disabled homicide victims; the problem being that there are far too many of them. Disabled people have a much increased homicide risk, and the type of disability doesn't seem to matter much--whether physical, mental, psychological, or sensory, visible o...
