I found this book very helpful: A Field Guide to Earthlings: An autistic/Asperger view of neurotypical behavior by Ian Ford It explains "typical" behavior in a way that you don't feel guilty for not getting it on your own. (Rare, I know…) Then it explains how you are expected to respond, without pre...

Upon meeting people, if I could know who was worth investing energy into, and who wasn't it would make my life much easier. I always invest time in people who are more emotionally immature than me. Then with people who would actually be good role models, I don't know how to talk to them. Very frustr...

I was labelled gifted by age 10, but my school work was pretty average. Had a hard time socially, was very shy. Had a nervous stomach and home worries. Now as an adult, my quirks are my assets. In my PhD program, it isn't weird to be focused on my research etc. The working world was much harder beca...

It was a much-needed almost-the-end-of-the-semester day off :)

I just got accepted into a PhD program for the fall of this year. I have been debating some of the same things you mention: stress mangement, communication, organization, etc. I will say that this last semester of Master's work has prepared me better than I had hoped. I have been able to get to know...

I pre-read/pre-study just before each class, then audio record the lecture. If the professor makes lecture slides/power points available, I read and bring those too. I have a hard time filtering out what information is relevant, so i feel less anxious (so then better able to listen) just being reall...

Sending in my application to the PhD program this week! I got three professors plus one work reference to write letters of recommendation. All that's left is the GRE. QUESTION: What kind of financing packages were you offered when you were accepted? I'm hoping that my GRE scores will be enough for m...

Hi! Thanks for all of the replies! I worked for 3 years in public schools with kids from 3 to 7. I enjoyed the kids, and really connected well with them, but the adults were much harder. team meetings were really draining as i could never project enough confidence in my point of view to feel like a ...

Hi I am considering my next steps after i complete my MEd next spring. From what i understand, an EdD involves more practical applications of theory, and PhD would be all theory and writing. both sound good as i would be concentrating in special education, but taking my own Aspie needs into account,...

We are going to visit my family for a week later this summer. I plan on composing an email explaining some do's and don't's before we get there. For one, DS has been calling people names a lot lately whenever he gets angry. The problem is that when a 6 yo is really angry and calls you a "doorknob" ...

As long as I don't force myself to "make nice" when I don't feel like it, then we get along great.

But, if we weren't related we would have nothing to talk about.

The older I get, the more I consider my handful of close friends my family. They are the people I depend on most.
