Having a high IQ and an ASD is like having a Lamborghini without any wheels. You can keep revving the engine, but you just don't go anywhere. Frustrating. I was in Mensa in London about 20 years ago. I connected with a few people, but overall it was more like a professional drinking club, and I didn...

I think the social deficits are definitely a symptom , but they are not the thing itself. It's the weak sense of one's own self that leads to the social deficits/stigmata. If you don't have a very coherent sense of your own persona, you don't have a social self to project onto the world around you.

I can research anything and everything - where to stay on a trip, the merits of various diet plans.

The trouble is, the internet makes research so open-ended.

I spend much more time researching how to do something than I spend actually doing it. A recipe for failure and non-acheivement.

I took the Mensa test when I was 29 and came out with an IQ score of 159. It was quite affirming, as it made me realise that I wasn't as stupid as everybody had always told me I was... When I was 49 I was diagnosed with Aspergers. That made me realise, after all this time, that 'not fitting in' had ...

My reaction is the same as most here. Feeling exposed, stressed and threatened; difficulty carrying on a conversation; melting away. If there is one symptom that all people on the spectrum seem to share it is this sort of response to eye contact. I have a theory that NTs instinctively wear a sort so...

My answer would be 'no' to all of those. One of the GPs at my local practice referred me to a psychologist at the local mental health dept. I had two sessions with her and some standard tests. She then referred me to an Adult Aspergers Unit that was just being set up in the county (Worcestershire). ...

I was diagnosed 2 years ago age 49. Haven't told my mum yet. She's 79, not sure what she'd make of it. I had to go through the process just to settle the question. Couldn't go on being 'self-diagnosed'. One could question what use it would be at this age. After all, my life is ruined already...altho...

Whalewatcher and Krabo: Now this is interesting! Not only did someone's post exactly reflect my own opinions, but someone said that the post reflected their thoughts exactly! Yay for recursion! I simply have to add a post saying that your post reflects my opinions, just to turn it into a fractal zo...

I never got along with children, although for some reason I always wanted my own. When ours were born I connected with them immediately, and my relationship with them has been the best thing in my life, by far. However, they are now nearly teenagers and are starting to find me a bit tiresome in vari...

I think this is something that isn't discussed enough. It's something I've been thinking about quite a bit since my diagnosis. Part of my growing understanding of myself is the realisation that I don't have a coherent sense of self. I suspect most of the ('normal') people around me do have such a th...

Surely being inquisitive and creative are mutually inclusive.

People who work in HR tend to have neither quality, that's why they come up with nonsense like this.

This test didn't feature in my diagnostic process. I once did it online and got about 75% right. I think it's a fundamentally flawed test. I've never had a problem looking at photos and drawings of people, and have learned how to interpret expressions in images. If I had to tell the expressions of a...

Empathy, conscience, and sympathy are all quite different things. Lack all three and you're James Holmes.

I think it might be possible to have sympathy for someone (putting yourself in their position), even though it might be hard to have empathy (seeing things from their perspective).

Thanks for this. I'm glad you got to a diagnosis and can move forward. I was diagnosed a year ago, but haven't worked for a couple of years due to other health problems. However, I haven't claimed anything, I've stayed at home looking after the kids. I'm just curious as to what boxes a diagnosis tic...
