I propose we start a dictionary of autism related words. There's probably already an Autism Dictionary somewhere, but I haven't found it. So, for starters, I'll have a go at an A word. Autisphobe (~o'tis'fob) One who is afraid of the expression of autistic neurological difference. Often demonstrated...

Get this! I was scrolling thru the list of grant awards on the Autism Speaks website, and came across the description of this study, and the money the lead researcher was given in 2008 to do the work. Environmental Science Award 2008 3 year grant : 2008-2011 Etiology of Autism Risk Involving MET gen...

Mine came out ESC with diagnosis. I found the results prognosis a bit on the dire side. I rented my first apartment at 17, because there wasn't another option. I've lived independently ever since. Ready, or not, life comes at one, and one figures it out along the way. The formula they're using doesn...

Thanks pete1061, that's generous! :) I do intend to use it as an autistic group symbol, and I predict that I'll be asked about its provenance. So, this leads us to the ever awkward ,"Are you entirely out?" conversation. I think, "credit, where credit's due", is an important part of fairness. So, do ...

http://www.gifteddevelopment.com The Gifted Development Center in Denver has a slew of articles on it's website about the impact of visual spatial based learning preferences on standardized tests scores. They're the people who did the inhouse studies to justify using the General Abilities Index (GAI...

Ojani, I've been told that in the US, the diagnostic differential between PDD-NOS and Aspergers often comes down to the clinician's determination of the degree of perseveration. Do you have the "special interest" characteristic? I suppose some diagnosticians assume that they are doing the client a f...

Yes, it's not continuous grand mal. He just never comes entirely out of it in between. Takes an hour or more before he finally has one last grand mal, and throws up one last time before sleeping. :(

I just finished telling someone I felt bad for them. Didn't even see this thread. I agree with OliveOilMom. There's a huge difference between feeling genuinely bad for someone, and pretending to feel bad for them, while in reality your ego is having a schadenfreude (sp?) field day. (believing yourse...

Now you're making me laugh in the middle of feeling bad for you. I'm sorry it didn't turn out the way you wanted. Things must work differently in Hungary. I can think of a bunch of people in the US who are poster children/representees of Aspergers, whose PQ has got to be very much higher than their ...

I know, I think it's great! :) Looking back I notice DemonAbyss10 made first mention of the squarepeg round hole experience. Your design is a perfect expression of that insight. It has everything that a good group symbol design should have: 1. Simplicity 2. Universality of experience 3. Centrality o...

My brother gave me the Meyers-Briggs when I was a teenager and I tested INTJ, but as an adult it has always come out INFJ, although the F and T are still close. If anyone is interested in a more complex, intricate version of the MBTI, Lenore Thomson wrote a book called Personality Type an Owners Man...

I think the circle inside the square is brilliant. It refers to an experience of life which is universal within the autistic community, as opposed to a common, but not universal special interest, or personal preference. (re. cats). And I also like the ordering, with the volume of the square falling ...

The vet wanted me to keep a seizure journal before making a decision about meds. She did tell me that the inherent danger of status epilepticus is brain damage due to overheating. Phenobarbital seems to be the route to take. I'm Widget's third family. Apparently, no one wanted to deal with this. Tha...

Unfortunately, we don't have a pets forum, or I would have posted there. So, I hope no one is offended by my asking a dog related question here. Sorry. So, here's the situation, my corgi, Widget, has epilepsy. He goes into status epilepticus, which usually lasts an hour, to an hour and a half. In fa...

Huh....That's interesting. My perception is that there is a very low level of conflict on this forum. Different perspectives, yes. Different life experiences, yes. Different stages in life, certainly. Perhaps, I'm just not going to the same forum branches on here. But apart from some regular fiestin...
