I don't think it the researchers who are mis-representing their findings- I think its the crappy reporting.

Mage, I just don't think that is true. On the AAP (American Academy of Pediatricians) website there is a PDF guide for the treatment of autistic children. It covers medication for various things, including depression, anxiety and self-injurious behaviors. I'll post the exact link if I can find it.

And Alex got some expectedly snotty and condescending comments in the replies. Apparently some parents of autistics think Alex is their kid too. Keep self-advocating, Alex, and all of you in the autistic vanguard. I have a couple of very nice little Aspies coming up and I am grateful for all that yo...

My kid takes it, but it is generally known now by its generic name "fluvoxamine." I can't say if it reduced his creativity or not. Before he started it he had such a crippling problem with anxiety and negative thought patterns that he couldn't create much of anything. We haven't had any side effect ...

Yeah, I thought the article was a little strange in that it talked about the seratonin levels as a cause of autism. It didn't seem to be the thrust of the research at all.

Speaking as a parent, I would be thrilled to have an Aspie teenager help out with my kids. What you need to do is find an organization that is already helping kids and offer to volunteer. Do you live in the US? Here's one idea: Most big cities here have SRAs (Special Recreation Associations) that ar...

I believe that speech therapy is the most valuable program a school can offer anyhow. So, if he's receiving that then he's already getting the help he needs. I'm not convinced that the other accomodations are that helpful or worth the fight to get them. That's a pretty remarkable blanket statement, ...

Does he have any specific interests that might bring him into informal contact with other Aspies? For example, my ten year old goes to Games Workshop every Sat. It's a store where the kids paint and battle with fantasy miniatures. There are usually at least a few people there who really seem Aspie (...

You can also go through your local school district. They should have a free comprehensive screening for preschool age kids. Just get a hold of the district office and tell them that you suspect your child has a disability. Once you get a diagnosis the school disctrict is obligated to provide a presc...
