Whether you disclose the diagnosis or not, the point is that there are differences that need to be accounted for. You will either say "I'm really sensitive to sound" or "I'm sensitive to sound because I have asperger's". In some cases, the diagnosis will give you the weight of medical authority. In ...

The difference between accepting yourself and not accepting yourself is about the belief that change can happen. When you don't accept yourself or don't forgive yourself you are saying "This is who I am and nothing can change." When you do accept yourself you say "This is not who I am, this is what ...

I can't taste much so food isn't that important to me. Also, my body doesn't inform me when it's time to eat so I easily skip meals. Sometimes food is highly obnoxious to me and I wish we just had food pellets.

It may not have always been this way, but in modern society, gender equality is a nearly universally accepted value. It's not going way, so the only reason to resist it is if one has a strong incentive to resist it. Those who reject equality tend to be either (1) religious nuts (male and female in ...

Not much. Not because it's completely wrong, but because it misses the point. The idea of being polte can be seen as ritualized lying, and being polite certainly does involve saying things that are not true. For example, polite speech requires that you ask for people's "pardon" when you may not giv...

My question is if there is a benefit to the diagnosis when you are an adult? I have only two reasons for why I may go and get "formally" diagnosed. 1. I need protection at my job as a disabled person being persecuted for not being like all the other NTs. 2. I need government assistance which requir...

I just wonder if there's a reason why they don't want to be outgoing...i.e. why being so careful about trying new things? What do you mean by outgoing? One aspect of this is attention sharing. NTs, when they encounter something that interests them, will share it with others around them. Autistics d...

it seems everyone explains empathy differently each time i read about it, so i dont think we will ever know what it actualy is and where the line is drawn between nts having empathy and autistics lacking this empathy. Empathy and sympathy get confused all the time and it is the lack of discipline i...

Momsparky's comments about politeness are spot on. Honestly the first step is to start practicing awareness around your own methods of communication. Can you actually identify how you are communicating something? I find that most NTs rely too heavily on non-verbal communication. To them it doesn't r...

Though I appreciate your participation, with an article such as this I think it might be better to inquire into some of the general ideas behind it rather than get stuck on little points. To me, it's the little things that build into the general idea. You can not have a foot without 12 inches. Ther...

What is your aim here? To justify authoritarian psychiatrists giving a patient prosac, and attributing the entire depression syndrome to a biochemical imbalance (very possibly because the doctor is just lazy or busy or whatever)? The way a person thinks and feels about things, about himself, about ...

So I still don't ''get'' empathy. It might help to realize that AS people don't have a problem with empathy. I'll use an example that you'll be more familiar with: A person walks into a crowded and noisy restaurant. The noise is overwhelming and they leave feeling really anxious. Can you visualize ...

Just a single example of how this article is a little biased in one direction. "I guarantee you that in the course of our conversation a doctor is telling a patient, "you have a chemical imbalance -- that's why you're depressed. Take Prozac." Despite the fact that every doctor who knows anything kno...
