I think taking out our bad moods on people who don't deserve it is almost universal. As for expecting you to do his laundry, well, yeah, that sounds like just the kind of weird-as-hell thing I've come to expect from NTs... I don't get it. |

Well hey man, we can cling to our labels all we want, but the truth is that none of us has enough knowledge about the human brain to sufficiently define what we are. Any of us. Autistic, schizophrenic, sociopathic, so-called "neurotypical" - we're all a little crazy, and some of us are very crazy. I... |

Non-chalant is good, but don't try to be TOO aloof. Just text her or call her, I know it sucks to initiate but that's what ruined so many of my chances in the past: they thought I didn't care, when in reality, I cared so much that I overanalyzed everything until I became paralyzed and ended up doing... |

Everything disappoints me. Like you said, the memories are mostly happy, but if I really think hard I can remember that most of those times were definitely marked by mixed emotions. So I think it's just a matter of everything isn't what it's cracked up to be. Only through the act of cherishing past ... |

I'm terrible with poetry! If you want to say something, just say it. Does it always have to be in some code that only other poets can understand? A friend of mine in college had the same problem with poetry. She was in an advanced English class one semester, and they were studying poetry. In one po... |

Wow, you know, I've done that my whole life and never even thought about it. Never seemed to bother anyone much, but it has gotten me a reputation for being forgetful even though I'm really not at all, for most things. Didn't even consider that it might be part of AS. I guess it does bother people a... |

Well, I was basically the same way when I was 17. I feel like i probably could have done either, I just did not want to at all. It might have helped me, actually, since working has helped me find ways to deal with people and learn social skills. But then, I was pretty socially disconnected at that a... |

Figures. Seek help, only to immediately confront ignorance and BS. There is a lot of that in this world. I guess you ought to find another opinion, or two or however many it takes. I imagine the psych industry is as subject to personal bias as any, so finding someone that seems competent and sincere... |

From your description, your son sounds a lot like me - even more capable and experienced than me when I was 18, and I was taking crazy bus-train trips and flights across the country by myself by then. I was kind of terrified at first that I'd get myself lost or miss the last train or something, but ... |

Hey man, I get you. It seems like almost everyone I meet are selfish most of the time, and can't help themselves from being sh***y to anyone they can get away with it to. The exceptions I know convince me that there's still hope for the world, but it does get tough when people just give in to their ... |

Absolutely true. People need to stop thinking in terms of mental illness and disease when it comes to autism and schizophrenia and bipolar and... you know... the rest. Evolution thrives on diversity. |

Apathy is as valid an outlook as any other. Like you said, instincts and emotions come from chemicals and electricity. We are derived from a very long chain of impossibly tiny and innumerable interactions like that, from the beginning of time. To me, though, that makes life seem like something a bit... |

I know for me, when I try to communicate my subjective experience of symptoms and brain anomalies, some major part always seems to be lost in communication. A psychiatrist may want to diagnose you in some specific way but, and scientists have done recent research on this - the brain just doesn't wor... |
