Empathy: one of those things with multiple overlapping definitions.
Socially, empathy involves having your perceptions of others’ emotions recognised by others The autistic variant, given that we tend to miss out on reciprocal perceptions, isn’t the same. |

I learned about autism and began to gain understanding of why my life is how it is. Some years later, I went through official diagnosis when a researcher told me he couldn’t use my story without it. Nothing helps the condition when you’re an adult. Nothing eases the exclusion from normal society. Sp... |

Some years after I self-diagnosed, studied the available information, and concluded there were no effective remedies available for autistics aged fifty plus, an acquaintance working on a PhD thesis on adult autism told me he could only use my story if I completed a formal diagnosis. So, I completed ... |

Just keep breathing. Or not - you have the choice.
Find something to do with your time. He is gone, don’t dwell on that. You are still you and there is room in the world for you. Don’t look too hard, and it will find you. |

High functioning enough to have got through more than half a century thinking everyone else was like me, yes.
Not high functioning enough to have much of a life. |

I self diagnosed when I was 52, then took the formal diagnosis a couple of years later when a researcher told me he couldn't use my story without it. Then I spent a few years learning that there is no perception of autism in adults among the mindsets of the neurotypicals. Yes, autism, and ignorance ... |
