Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: DSM change justified due to pandemic of AS misdiagnosis

I'm fairly sure I understand the OP's assertion. It seems to me the difficulty with any diagnosis of an ASD, whether self or third-party, is the borderline cases. People with clear and obvious life difficulties are always going to less contentious. Additionally for the self-diagnosed borderline case...

Imagine: You see someone in a room. He is opening drawers and turning over the contents. He bends down and peers under the cabinet. He pulls the cabinet out from the wall and looks behind it. What is he doing? He's lost something and is looking for it. ToM enables YOU to imagine what HE is thinking....

It seems like half the posts here are trying to figure out what goes on inside the heads of normal people, which seems to demand a theory of mind You're right about that! But of course it also seems that half of the people here at the opposite end of the autism scale to that described in the books,...

I think that someone may have broadly the same deficits in non-verbal communication all the time, but that with the "specialist subject", they are sort of masked. Partly it's because of the confidence that one has when speaking in one's own subject, partly because they are more than made up for by t...

The way I see it is that "communication skills" is an umbrella term for expressive and receptive language, i.e., things you say and hear, and body language, which means facial expressions, that kind of thing, and your own use of gestures to regulate conversation. Typically Aspies can have good writt...

I don't have a diagnosis but I can still relate to having a better understanding and self-observation of autistic traits in myself once I'd learned about them. For example, I Initially thought "there's no way that I'm avoiding eye contact with anyone! No, that doesn't describe me, I'm a perfectly fr...

With Asperger's, IQ must be at least normal. With autism, IQ is unspecified and can in theory be anywhere. That, plus the onset of speech, is one of the main diagnostic differences. Well, according to stuff I read, but I admit it seems to depend upon who you read.

I started reading up on Aspergers and had one of those “Aha” moments. I seemed to have a number of symptoms mentioned. I rarely look people in the eye (only upon meeting them, sometimes when they speak, rarely when I speak). For some reason, I must look away when thinking and expressing any mildly ...

Well, that would be of interest to me, but I should say, I'm probably on the NT side of any dividing line, so wouldn't be qualified to make any choice, unless you included "aSocial NT" or something like that. The bit that I find hard to reconcile is when people including yourself say "I can deal wit...

There are four sub-types of Asperger's Syndrome, although they don't form part of any diagnostic criteria. They are (working from memory here): Aloof - avoids contact, I guess more towards the "classic" autism, sometimes called Kanner's Syndrome. Active but Odd - actively seeks contact but isn't goo...

Please will someone explain the "Aspie walks into a bar thinking it was a library" one to me, it's been mentioned more than once.

Maybe it's a US/UK thing, but I'm damned if I can work it out.

That's scary. I did that once 40 years ago (apart from the beer - I don't drink). And I've never walked into a bar since, because I thought that socialising wasn't what it was made out to be.

This. The hideous pretend embraces and air kisses freak me out. I get really anxious when we're going somewhere where I know that I will get the social hug and I hate it. Of all my family, there are just two couples who I don't see so often that haven't spotted the awkwardness I feel. All the others...

There seems to be disparity between the academic literature and this board. Reading the books, I come across phrases such as "all sufferers of autism and Asperger's Syndrome will experience lifetime difficulties"; "Everyone must have the social and interaction deficit"; and "Some support will be req...

I'm so mild I'm a bit doubtful I'd get diagnosed at all, I just seem to have more than my fair share of autistic traits. I have enough to meet the diagnostic criteria, but, I'd say most are below threshold. I'm not really impaired enough. If it wasn't for the fact that I regularly make the social fa...
