Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: NT children stimming when stressed?

Interesting topic - I remember non-autistic classmates doing stims when stressed, like chewing pencils, twirling long hair in fingers and drumming fingers on the desk... I suppose when the stress gets intense enough, even NTs can regulate it some by repetitive small movements.

I'm autistic and can relate to the part about being very resistant to getting outside help. In fact it's been an issue my entire life and for me it stems from being misunderstood and having suggestions made that are common-sense and work for most people but are non-starters for me. A lot of it stems...

My diagnosis was shortly before I turned three years old, which was a long time ago. I have prosopagnosia and there's just no way I can see a face all at once. If I try to see it in its entirety, the individual features sort of pop in and out. My mind lacks the ability to hold more than a couple of ...

Thanks for posting the article. That's a very unfortunate situation, including the section "Really Worrying" that states "The Autism Act came into force 10 years ago, aiming to stop autistic adults falling between gaps in support and services. But its impact has been limited by nation...

I feel for you - I had that happen a lot in the past, about six months ago and I wanted to pull my hair out. What was happening then was the timed auto-logout would sign me out of WrongPlanet very frequently and if I wrote a long, thoughtful post and clicked 'submit' it would sometimes direct me to ...

I use blue-blocker sunglasses while driving and outside in the sun. They dramatically reduce visual overload for me. I don't get anxiety so much when exposed to bright light as I get really tired and irritable. I have a pair of clip-on blue-blockers that can go over prescription glasses too. I tend ...

Welcome to WrongPlanet! I'm autistic and I definitely understand how initiating conversations can be challenging. It's great that you both established up front that your friend doesn't typically start communication, which helps avoid misinterpreting that or taking it personally. Your friend might be...

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Can a Neurotypical even control their social cues?

Just like we can't seem to pair our emotional/social cues with theirs, can they do so with us if they attempt to? It seems like the cues and nuances in speech typical to NT's are actually embedded into their psychology, paired with every single word and term so that there's some underlying structur...

Your approach of looking for the root cause of the behavior is quite thoughtful. The child reminds me a bit of myself around that age. I was nonverbal until I was 4 years old and for a short time I was in a preschool with other kids and they would have nap times, cribs for the tiny kids and various ...

Hi Jonah - I'm glad you found Wrong Planet. Hearing from other autistic people has helped me understand myself better and to accept that certain challenges I've faced are related to autism rather than being something I was causing. I hope this site is useful to you too!

Thanks for sharing the video - that's actually one of my very favorite songs. My synesthesia takes me on an incredible journey with hearing it. And it's hard to imagine a more vivid way of portraying being isolated from the external world than this video. As you mention, I sometimes feel a deep loss...

I have four tattoos and I'm autistic. I have a white-footed mouse on my upper right arm, a hummingbird on my upper left arm, an American crow on my chest to the left, and a prairie dog on my left shin. None are visible if I'm wearing a normal shirt and full-length pants. I enjoyed getting the tattoo...

Although autism is described as the most heritable mental condition, it's not simple to test for. It's complicated because autism is akin to a syndrome with many possible genetic factors. Some can be outright genetic differences but others are related to copy number variations of particular genes. A...

I tend to be hypervigilant, keenly aware of little sounds and visual details. Some of that is PTSD, but I've heard other autistics tend to be like this too. Small details that are out of place tend to jump out and register in our attention. One way I've noticed I'm observant in different ways than N...

Interoception refers to the perception of sensory-related stimulation within the organs of the body and includes feelings of pain, muscle tension, bladder tension, hunger, and much more. Welcome to WrongPlanet! That's a tough question. I suspect his withdrawing from the conversation when you join in is due to an issue other than his autism. My own experience and the experiences I've heard from other autistics is that it's easier to enter into social situations, including conversatio...
