I am an life long atheist, but have found in my middle aged years that I love spending time with religious folks. Most Christians, but particularly Mormons, and also Hindus. I don’t know what it is, but I just seem to share so many interests and values with these kinds of people. I am tempted to fak...

My 6 year old goes to private speech therapy once a week, and has for a couple years. I was surprised to learn that some of what he works on in therapy are social skills. Turn taking, interpreting faces, politeness. Maybe they all do this or it’s just ours, I don’t know. But if a kid is not neurotyp...

Yeah it’s kind of hurtful for people to use a cognitive slur for political differences.

Brave New World is required reading AFTER 1984 and Animal Farm. Lord of the Flies as well. In sociology I was taught a theory by Leon Festinger called “cognitive dissonance.” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance If you hold two contradictory beliefs/opinions or are confronted with tw...

I suspect they are more likely to call you as a possible juror if you vote actively, including primaries.

I get called once every year or two but never get to serve. Each time I’m like yes! It’s my time to shine! But no luck so far...

Some of us heard about Covid-19 in Fall of 2019, several months before it was reported in Western countries. The common people in China were talking about it and sending out videos. So I’m sure Trump knew. I want to know what was he “supposed” to do? What amount of shutting things down would satisfy...

Geez, you guys... I LOVED it. The only thing that would have made it better is if they jumped on each other and did an awkward old man fight. They did get some information across. Biden made it clear that he has his own platform for energy, that he supports law and justice (opposed to law and order)...

I was looking into this a few years ago. Autistic people do seem more likely to have internal states that are harder to describe and may not be experienced broadly by others. I believe this is from using different social input in developing ideas about internal states, what they mean, and how to dis...

I have been married to an autistic man most of my life and we have a six year old with ADHD and some other stuff. Depression in autistic people can look like laziness or it can turn into an addiction with a special interest, such as playing too many video games. The good news is that the special int...

To answer the question of why is he so “disliked”: In the US, we don’t just have freedom of speech etc in our laws, but it’s deeply engrained in our culture. We believe our diversity makes us stronger. We openly argue here about things that other cultures either have a collective agreement upon, or ...

Many very good points here. I wish I could bring Fnord in with me to a principal meeting! Any meeting, really. In general, yes I agree the kids need to get used to the regular social expectations. Here at home we spent 35 years not knowing my husband was an aspie and 5 years not knowing our son has ...

I know this is hard. But the best thing really is to stop giving your time and attention to things that bother you. I AM a Trump supporter, but it’s stunned me how he has permeated all news and entertainment. It is absolutely what he wants. It’s Branding. You just have to turn it off and when people...
