yes! I have a particular area of federal policy that I'm pretty obsessed over, although I don't have enough time to really keep up. I do it in spurts. but one day I stopped to talk to a canvasser looking for prop 8 support and prop 8 is one of the tiny steps that might get my pet policy more nationa...

I finally got around to making that appointment to go see my doc about it, after paying close attention to what's actually going on during the weeks I don't smoke. it seems like my body really can't tell when it should purge. after 3-4 days I end up nauseous with a backache and bloated and cramps, t...

I felt the same way. it was difficult to find someone to assess me but in the end insurance covered almost all of it, and I'm glad I have the assessment.

diagnosed recently, in my mid-40s. yes, it has been life-changing. my focus has completely changed. I'm not down on myself all the time for not "getting" it. I also reviewed my whole life from a new perspective and so much of it made sense that never did. I forgave myself for not being able to prote...

that would indeed be of interest, Callista! I've been searching medical journals and all autistic brain activity studies seem to be done using standard task sets. I haven't found one yet that addresses what happens in our heads when we are absorbed in our special interests. since savant skills rely ...

unknown... she seems to have been diagnosed with autism as a child and was lucky enough to have a very supportive parent. from what she's written, she was diagnosed as high functioning autistic with savant abilities as an adult, but when she says she's among the small number of savants existing toda...

Savant syndrome can NOT be diagnosed with a PET scan. I've only found references to one study of unique brain activity in adults with savant syndrome that developed after brain damage and one autistic child with savant syndrome. I've found no references to PET scan being used as a diagnostic tool, ...

That's between you and her, Bhetti. As for myself, I don't differentiate between the autism and savantism as you say. I'm grateful for the capability I do have artistically. It is significant for a reason. In a more primitive society, I might be killed altogether for my lack of capabilities, otherw...

That's funny that you want her to differentiate for you on any specifics. It all plays together anyway and an individual isn't expected to talk in a diagnostic/specific fashion about their own condition or necessarily be able to differentiate those things to begin with. Who are you to judge this pe...

As for me, not the person you were finding fault with for whatever reason, I am a savant in the area of visual art and I am also autistic which equal: Autistic Savant. if I said something you didn't understand, and I tried to clarify, and you got frustrated and trotted out your dx as an explanation...

I did some more reading last night and the woman who claims the savantism was diagnosed with a PET scan and concluded to have the genius savantism that is currently estimated to exist in only about 30-100 people in the world. her savant skills apparently lie in the artistic realm, but she also said ...

It mostly sounds like an autistic misunderstanding brought about by different areas of conversational focus and wording. From what I've seen here on WP, it's quite common and nothing that needs to be taken personally (from either side).
yes, I think that is the case.

where are the experts, Meadow? I know you said you're not interested in further discussion with me, but I did spend a good chunk of time searching for information. I read a bunch of articles on savant syndrome before I posted here. I figured this would be the most likely place to find people who hav...

naturally she could have sensory or cognitive issues, given that she has HFA. it's not really a matter of giving her a break, either. I'm struggling with how being an autistic savant causes a limit on what information one is willing or able to allow in or to process. I can see the HFA factoring in, ...

ok, what you guys are saying makes sense. splinter skills makes sense. I hadn't heard of those before. I think I have a couple myself, including an artistic flavored one that makes it possible for me to learn new media really quickly and get to the point of doing things that people say are impossibl...

I've been kinda confused about "savant" and "savant abilities" since an online encounter with an HFA woman who claims to be a savant. it started when I got annoyed by Demi Moore's lawyers and posted a rant about how many homeless could be sheltered and hungry kids could be fed for the legal fees bei...
