As has been pointed out by Kraft, having a spectrum disorder makes this inevitable. One of the greatest ironies in my life is that my greatest achievement - my highly adaptive skills, became my greatest impediment in being diagnosed and getting the help I so desperately needed. Another irony is that...

My biological father was allowed to be himself and was accepted for who he was.

I also know many people who were happily adopted and deeply accepted.

I was adopted after six weeks. I traced my biological parents at the age of 24. I discovered then that my biological father was autistic. Much of my life growing up in my adopted family I was told daily that I was odd, strange, peculiar etc. The psychological abuse drove me deep within myself and I ...

Maths was as alien to me as voting for a right wing politician........ Good luck America. Autism is for me a way of being, and as such can never adequately be conveyed through theories, concepts or analysis. ‘I didn’t arrive,’ said Albert Einstein, ‘at my understanding of the fundamental laws of the...

I have high functioning autism. I am also right brained dominant. Being right brained dominant often gives me an advantage over many in the autistic spectrum with respect to adapting to life and in social situations. Combined with having had an extremely abusive childhood whereby I had to adapt or b...

It seems to me that whenever someone posts a thread on organising, 80 percent come out as highly organised and the rest super organised. I'm in the super organised category. I'm curious if those in the super organised category have developed other highly adaptive skills and if such adaptive ways mad...

I was curious if you had any favourite quotes on autism that you would like to share here? If you don't have any, you're welcome to make some up. Here's one I made up earlier : "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, but spiritual beings having a human experience." I could ...

Well........ I'm sure many of us have had to put up with people thinking that because we can be articulate and gifted in many areas, that this can conceal the complex difficulties we have in day to day life. I know many of us have a hard time coping with the ignorance of those making assumptions abo...

For those of you who hold a more expanse view of the autistic spectrum, the following little piece I wrote might resonate with you. I write from personal experience about being in the spectrum. Autism........it's not what you think "He who sees the infinite in all things, sees God, and he who s...

Hi Deeper Sky I enjoyed your post and I love your username. Your story is actually quite common, and in many ways it mirrors mine. I am a teacher of the Alexander Technique, Writer and elder at my local Quaker Meeting. If I was not to have traced my biological father later in life and found out he h...

I have HFA and very righted- brained orientated - Most of the aspies I have met who are right brained have a more natural ability to read emotions in themselves and others. As a child I had to be other-ly focused otherwise I would be humiliated and abused for being odd. This all enabled me to develo...

I have been diagnosed with both. I don't find it beneficial to distinguish between the two. Anxiety is a mental and physical state that is uncomfortable and impairs my ability to function. AS is my underlying neurological makeup, always in the background, just part of who I am. I can't do anything ...
