Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Are Aspies Misunderstood By Everyone

I can spot an aspie among friends, and may sometimes have more empathy with such friends, but on average, I find other aspies harder to understand than NTs. There's just more variety, only some of it near my corner.

Ask them about themselves. Most people like to talk about themselves, and will feel as if they know you better after you only listen - maybe by how you react. Then show them you listened by asking about the same things next time you see them. With luck, some of them will be interesting, and with mor...

Hello Dear One My little book is about my experiences (not yours) in having autism and being a Quaker. Wishing you well from London Dear one Chris Dear Chris, For me, the Society of Friends does not quite qualify as a religion - I wouldn't get thrown out for speaking my mind. I can't relate to peop...

I have never owned a TV set. I do, however, recommend reading Jerry Mander's "Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television." Why do you complain here, instead of just not watching?

What's that, Klingon? Typo? Code?

It's a mix of Mongolian and Klingon, popularized by 20 year old basement dwellers.

Thanks. Do you know what it means yet? Care to translate for everyone trying to follow this thread?

A couple of things changed my course radically, although they didn't feel traumatic at the time. Probably the first was the news that the A-bomb had made it necessary for my generation to be the first to overcome war. That spoiled my elders' ability to sway me with tradition and authority, since the...

Maybe a better question is if it is possible to be charismatic without being rather strange?

Pretty much all weird/eccentric people also seem to have social issues. Is it even possible to be weird and charismatic at the same time? I know some people can be cute and endearing because of their weirdness and awkwardness. But there's always some sense of disrespect. Emo Phillips. Robin William...

What I don't understand is why my interest in efficiency is so rare. People keep doing things the hard, expensive ways.

I don't see any particular connection between AS and spiritual life - we are all the same in spirit. I'd be interested in how you find a connection, or a path of interest to us, but a book about religions leaves me cold. Spiritual people see our similarities; religious ones see our differences.

If that was me, odds are that I wasn't getting enough sleep, which can turn into a positive feedback loop.

It might help to think of yourself as an actor, detached from the role at parties. I get away with looking at eyebrows, etc, instead of eyes.
However, another possible factor is forgetting to drink enough water, etc, or eating too much refined food.

After one old gentleman's wife died, his son convinced him to move to the city where the son was working, so he could help his dad out if necessary. The dad packed what he wanted to keep, and the son found him a new place. Arriving there, he was shocked to see that his son had him sharing rooms with...

I've always been fond of maps, so Google's are wonderful. Street view is good for looking up old haunts, and also for getting ready for trips. I do wish there was a utility to "ghost" one area over another, though. I've done it with paper twice.

The best mind we have is Edward Whitten, who would understand me. Would you have a link to a good introduction to him? I remember Robert Persig's delight and relief at discovering James Sidis, who had been banished for one of his discoveries about American history. I have found that most people pre...
