Definitely always look without just assuming your right-of-way will be recognized and respected, and yes, I am always on the lookout. I think it also helps to wear clothes that do not easily blend into the background, and then to walk decisively to "claim your space" as you go. For example...

Politics, religion and philosophy are often intertwined even to the point of being indistinguishable...and yes, with the bottom line being the matter of one or more persons having political authority and power over one or more others whether or not religion is specifically involved.
