I was recently reflecting that I never used to see progressive bigots, but they are common now. I think that ever since dogma took over the social sciences people have been trying to project and defend ever less grounded self-images and social theories. The acceleration of intolerance over the last ...

I have safely assumed that everyone has at least one crazy idea. One astronomer of quite shattering eminence thought that our nostrils pointed down to save us from inhaling space dust, as if he had never seen dust floating in a beam of sunlight, or other noses, mouth-breathing, sleeping, or wind. I ...

I have often had my ideas stolen e.g. at work meetings when I quietly state a solution to a problem, then someone (usually a man I'd sad to say) overhears my idea and loudly presents the idea as their own. Then he is celebrated and cheered for 'having such a brilliant idea.' When it was mine all al...

Perception can also be tricky - we see what we expect to see more than we look afresh. However, there is also a problem with just what we are willing to see. I think that for a frightening number of people, the highest truth is not the one that can be proven in a lab, but the story that brings the m...

Horses return to a burning barn. Some dogs mourn their owners until they die, as do some humans. Sage grouse completely ignore predators during the mating dance. Beaver looking for a new pond are oblivious to everything else, more or less in a state of shock when not near water. However, they can ma...

Let's consider the animal's needs too. Perhaps the mother has noticed that the cat is not really happy there. Many animals are treated like brainless automatons, and develop "behaviour problems." Only a small minority of pet owners appreciate them for their own intelligence and unique abil...

Dear_one thank you I am guessing that if you found yourself as the only expert in a group that really needed to know about your topic and was clearly willing to listen, you would feel no difficulty being relaxed and "more yourself", amIright? Good guess. I have taught a few classes and do...

You've got about ten years. Why not make friends with your local wildlife that the cat can't get to?

Sometimes I get lucky in a social situation, and all it needs is what I have, usually through imitation. I think that I normally walk around with a lot more clarity than average regarding quite a few technical subjects.

^^ There are also thousands of charities that support people in need without regard to Autism, and more thousands of causes to improve the general welfare, help animals, reduce pollution, etc. Publishing to benefit one of those would help them, and not waste your work. That's a double win in my books.

If I do so well that in my 60's I'm taking selfies in an expensive white suite, white hat, white hair, white beard, horn-rimmed glasses (looking like a skinny Colonel Sanders does a Dos Equis commercial or an globe-trotting James Randi or random people asking me for Connor McGregor's autograph), ha...

I often was unsettled by lessons seeming to begin in the middle. I didn't feel like I understood materials until I had learned just what happens at the tip of a crack that may or may not extend. Without basic understanding, people can go badly wrong going by what "looks right." For many ye...

My head is stuck in the past. These days, I won't even approach the US border. I have a tendency to make jokes when stressed, and the TSA people are the kind who hate all humour, having been made fun of in school for not getting jokes. On the bright side, I once drove a friend to the airport and we ...

These days, with the PTSD, I can seldom sleep enough to enjoy travel even the first day. However, I had travelled with others before, and done a solo flight at 14 with many stopovers and re-bookings to dodge weather on the way home within the country. So, it did not seem strange to fly with a bicycl...
