Yes, I think so, in the tradition of Fielding. I'd recommend Thackeray, Gaskell, and Trollope if you decide against Dickens. Charlotte Brontë's Shirley is also brilliant, and criminally underrated. Thankyou for the recommendations. I'll keep an eye open for these. I enjoy finding classics second ha... |

Common birds include wrens, sparrows, blackbirds, blue great coal and long-tailed tits, dunnocks, goldcrest, wood pigeons, egrets, herons, barn and tawny owls. Starlings, skylarks, great spotted woodpeckers, I saw a green woodpecker in my garden once, never again. The Robins get a special mention, m... |

I read almost all Dickens' novels for school, with the exception of Oliver Twist which I keep staring at on my shelf. My favourites are Great Expectations , A Christmas Carol , and some of his short ghost stories. He's a great writer but I usually dread the high numbers of characters, the tropes, a... |

I picked up a copy of Bleak House yesterday in a charity shop for £1. I've always struggled with Dickens whenever I've tried to read his novels before. https://youtu.be/9aHJdeaAgO8 Sometimes I think that the sky is a prison and the earth is a grave. And sometimes I feel like Jesus, in some Chinese opera. And sometimes I'm glad I built my mansion from crazy little stones. But sometimes I feel so goddamned trapped by everything that I know. And I wi... |
