One of the first things they teach you in disaster training is the need for organization. So many things need to be done immediately and simultaneously that there has to be some sort of command structure from the start. The best way to waste limited energy and resources is to have everyone doing the...

One thing I learned from my previous job was that rehearsal of various scenarios helps to make the response to a situation somewhat automatic. I joined CERT (community emergency response team) and have taken a few years of training in local disaster response. It helps that survival skills is also on...

Hey, if I could get my old UNIX-version of Rogue to run on anything, I'd be thrilled.

Yes, I am. Have loved the genre since I could read and he is one of my favorite authors. You list the themes that I like best about his stories/novels and his great storytelling ability. For a budding screenwriter you have picked an excellent addiction!

Reading these responses, I definitely see the connection to my childhood! I am very fortunate that my parents supported my special interests, for the most part. I bet it was pretty expensive sometimes, considering that I could be totally done with an interest altogether right after they had signed m...

I am 4 out of the 6 kinds of people you mention who are likely to experience paranormal, but sorry, never had a paranormal episode.

Total morning person. I am at the trailhead most mornings at dawn. Watching the glow on the horizon spread and grow and turn the atmosphere all sorts of colors is awesome. All things seem possible in the early morning--I am both energized and at peace.

I really had to laugh at the extreme familiarity of this situation! When we are going somewhere later, I will ask my husband when we need to leave, then plan my day backwards from that time. I'll ask at least once more if we are still leaving at that time (he is known for making unilateral changes i...

I definitely do not discount the existence of realities that our senses can't detect. Who knew x-rays were there before we had the understanding to predict them/built machines to detect them? Bees see in ultraviolet, snakes see in infrared, etc., etc., just because we can't doesn't mean those things...

I live in the Pomona Valley area (about 20 miles east of LA) and the small cities there are very friendly. It is great having the mountains minutes away and the beach less than an hour away. I used to spend a lot of time in the downtown LA area (35 years ago), but rarely go there now. I didn't feel ...

All over the map. Some have lasted decades. Most last 3-10 years. Some very intense, all-consuming research projects last until I answer a single question--perhaps as little as a week or two. Some of the 3-10 year interests have resurfaced after decades. These can be particularly interesting when th...

For the special interests of bygone days that involved a lot of unused supplies, I find it hard to just throw away perfectly good stuff. I feel much better knowing it is going to a good home where someone will use it. Freecycle is the best place I've found for this kind of thing. I feel good at de-c...

But Anna, why good riddance? When I'm left alone and not nudged, I can buy much more and be a lot more loyal than any of those other customers... Indeed! I think they would find this out if they would allow me to shop the way I need to. But then again, I am not a big consumer of anything (except ma...

My life as a whole has gotten better since shopping on-line came into existence. When I am in a shop, I am running trade studies and analyses in my head, non-stop. I am not a recreational shopper. Redirecting me from this activity causes irritation and frustration. While I endeavor to not direct thi...

As a child, I drew all the time and carried my sketchbook with me where ever I went. I majored in design in college and worked in creative arts for about 12 years. I then explored my other interests in science/engineering for a couple of decades, but now that I'm retired (sometimes semi-retired), I'...
