One of my interests is genealogy. I am researching a particular section of my family who lived in a very rural isolated part of the country. What struck me, amongst other things, is that a great many of my distant relatives were unmarried and lived alone in isolated farms. The other thing to conside...

But it doesn't seem to differentiate at all between AS and NLD. That's probably because some authorities consider AS and NLD to be one and the same. Dr David Dinklage (google him) likens assessment to the elephant and the blindfolded men: one will reach out and touch a part of the elephant and call...

almarzhm, this is such a pity. The first thing that occurred to me as I read your post was 'Hey! Marriage isn't really about romance! What is this woman thinking of!!?' In my experience (of long term marriage as well as other shorter term relationships), marriage is usually NOT romantic. It's about ...

I think this is what they call a 'meltdown' - or so I've read since my dx, although I've experienced the phenomenon all my life. For me, these take two forms: the first is like you both describe. It's a more gradual, gentle (sorry, can't think of another way to explain it!), barely perceptible (unti...

hmmm...let's see...let me count the engineers in the immediate branches of the tree: grandfather, father, uncle, nephew...and number of 'odd', OCD, eccentric, obsessive, officially dx ASD females: mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, cousin, aunt. To start with. Don't let's go near siblings and c...

I personally know several people with AS who hold very responsible or high level jobs. For these they obviously have to 'communicate well'. What the world doesn't see is how hard they work at it and how much it takes out of them. From my own experience, especially of communicating with medical peopl...

That's fascinating, Dalebert. I wonder if it's something to do with the mirror neuron business? Like, instead of your neurons mirroring (i.e. feeling the other person's feelings) your neurons were feeling how it would be to be the other person physically.

Problem stage 1: Knowing when to read between the lines. Problem stage 2: Actually being able to. I think you summed it up neatly here, ML. On paper I can do anything, because I have the time to logic things through. In face-to-face exchanges I am lost. In fact, it's weird because I ALWAYS forget t...

superfantastic - interesting topic. I firmly put on a social cloak (the psych called it) when I go out, I've worked very hard on it over the years. I'd rather not have to speak with anyone when I go out but of course I have to. However, I wonder if anyone else has this: I always feel a huge resista...

... I don't consider myself old, because i have never reached maturity, self assurance, the tranquillity of a well deserved position in life. I not sure if this aggravates or eases my situation. In a sense i have a furious desire to "catch up". I know that this is possible in a very particular way....

I hate when people name their children after emotions or ideas. It's only a matter of time before they start naming their kids Smile or Sunshine. Hope, Liberty, and Justice are three of the most ill-concieved names ever. Waste of a perfectly good child. My given name means 'pure, open'. What does y...

It's interesting to read that children [and adults] with AS apparently have strong fantasy lives. How does that fit in with literature suggesting people with ASD don't have "imagination", then? On a rant: this is because the literature and diagnostic criteria are written by 'experts' who know...

I dont think you have to look for medical records. Rather letters (but letters ar conventional and full of lies), school records, diaries, number of friends e the general history of the subject. As for me it took a whole life to interpret who my parents have been, how they saw me. Many happenings w...

I thought it would be a good job,to read everything written by an author and then give them a psyc DX...Dont know who would actually pay me to do this...put seemed like it would be a fun job...Probably as accurate(or inaccurate) as the current method of 30 min sessions with someone asking about"and...

scrulie, yes, this ignorance on the part of psychiatrists etc is very poor isn't it? Just think how many of our ASD brethren have been horribly misunderstood and misdiagnosed all their lives (my father for one, he died without any of us realising that he was AS despite humungously obvious and weird ...
