Sometimes I watch the news, and it's obvious that a particular area is going through hard times - through no fault of its own - and some of the residents are still selflessly looking after their neighbors. I experience sorrow at the tragedy, and then a sense of appreciation and hope for mankind. Wh...

I have no idea how my need for privacy compares to other peoples', or NTs'. But yes, I do value my privacy greatly. I would rather be by myself than with someone else, generally. In college I tried to convince my parents to pay a bit extra so I could have a private room with no roommate (to no avail...

Smallfry does the same thing. Happy, happy, happy, doom. Like the terrible twos on crack. Sometimes I can predict the switch (hungry, tired) but other times there is no rhyme or reason that I can find at all. Totally maddening. Happy happy happy DOOM - yep, that's the story of our life with our Lit...

I would have to find a way to see my mother in another context - like meet her for lunch once in awhile, at her favorite restaurant.

And she's not doing anyone any favors by allowing this to go on in her house.

Run. Do Not Walk. Run. Save Yourself. What you are describing is Big Crazy and Dangerous, also highly unpredictable. These kinds of people terrify me. Once I've identified them - and they always let you know who they are, because they're PROUD of it - I get as far away from them as possible. Also, s...

Your daughter's a lucky girl. My father's favorite bit of wisdom was "You can't count on ANYONE, not even your family." Swear to god, he said that to me all the time. Probably not a big surprise, then, that I haven't heard from him in years. :? Your daughter is a very lucky, fortunate girl. Just try...

Sinagua, I'm ashamed to admit that last year I had a tantrum over not celebrating MOther's Day. My son misunderstood what the teacher meant by "doing something special" with your mothers and he ragged on me all day to take him somewhere fun (arcade, mini golf). I didn't get crap and my husband work...

My goodness, ladies! How wonderful! Honestly, though...I'm a bit surprised - not that you don't all totally deserve all the love you're getting! But my son and husband don't see anything "special" about Mother's Day. I'm not whining here, just stating how it is at our house. Son will make me a card ...

Our son totally does this. You can't BELIEVE the drama (well maybe you can!) if something's gone wrong. It's the end of the world. He will never be happy again. He hates himself. He wants to die. Then an hour later, it never happened. 8O And he may have his best week ever in, say, math or something,...

We all just feel it out as we go, don't we? Yes, we do. I guess it's all any of us can do, as parents. I've given up on the shoes, too. Really, you are right - there are lots of "slip-on" shoes (as he calls them) these days, and he will wear one pair at a time, until they fall apart. Then we go buy...

Great post, DW_a_mom - that was really helpful to me. Lots of good ideas and suggestions. I'm going to reread your comments again - maybe paste them into my journal. ;) Shoe tying has been a major issue. I feel badly for making him feel badly about it. I just could not understand why he felt no moti...

And my sons also never share their accomplishments. I find the 10/10 spelling test scrumpled up in the bottom of his backpack, just the same as the 3/10 one. Very interesting. It's good to hear other people's kids who do this, too. It's completely mystified us. The stack of papers he brought home t...

It's completely maddening to see him shoot himself in the foot on Monday, cry about it on Tuesday, then do the same exact thing on Wednesday. Then start the process all over again the following week. Oh yes, story of our lives! It is MADDENING. I feel badly for him, because I know he's frustrated a...

"cause and effect" - a huge issue at our house! For instance, I recently learned that our son has been leaving all his schoolwork and papers in his cubby at school, and not bringing them home. (I found out because his teachers discovered this and told me.) So I told him to please bring everything ho...
