R is a good stats program, but it's slow on a lot of tasks. For basic arithmetic you can use any program you like equally well (you could even use Python if you really wanted to) but for computationally intense tasks, especially involving matrices, you might be better off with a language that handl...

I remember most of them. I generally just do all my arithmetic in R though. Do you mean the statistical program R? I am really interested in it but have not gotten around to do much with it. Nothing thought about doing arithmetic with it though...I was thinking more bioinformatics and stuff like th...

Where can I learn how to do algorithms online? Find an algorithm you would like to implement, work on it until it works, and then make it as efficient as possible? I'd recommend starting with implementing some simple factorial algorithms, and then working your way up to dynamic programming. I'd per...

Windows 8 looks a lot like this (a flashy monstrosity).

My thoughts.... 1. Microsoft has a crash and burn practice that repeats regularly. Windows 95 was beta test garbage and 98 reflected a more polished version. Windows NT was garbage that Windows 2000 replaced. Windows ME and CE were laughed at. Windows XP was quite solid and was preferred over Windo...

Metaphysics? Largely junk. I'm not even convinced the pursuit of metaphysics could be anything but futile. Epistemology? An important, interesting field. Political Philosophy? Crap Philosophy Logic? Rigorous, and useful. Philosophy of Religion? Some of the worst gibberish ever written. The volumes ...

I've recently organised my music collection in Winamp. However, when I try organise my lectures Winamp creates a separate album for each lecturer, whereas I would like to just have one album containing all lectures. Does anyone know of a free program that will let me manually batch edit all my mp3's...

I'm a bitchy, cantankerousness atheist. I find it incredibly disturbing that a belief in Cloud Fairies is given such high status in Society, that Blasphemy is a crime in my country, that Religion is subverting Science in the US by demanding that it be treated as theory rather than hypothesis. As soo...

Genetic algorithms or genetic programming is NOT genetics (which is all about RNA and DNA). Rather it is a cartoon of natural selection. ruveyn I'm working with phylogenetic algorithms, and ones to determine sequences from micro-arrays using Euler paths, not the algorithms that mimic natural select...

not yet, but I am currently implementing the bioinformatic algorithms into the language of my choice, so I'll get more out of my biochemistry and genetic modules :) I do have a question related to PCR though; is RT - PCR commonly used? it seems like it would be a very useful technique (I assume it c...

I enjoy the mental kick you get from having a "eureka" moment while programming, or gaining a deeper insight into math and logic through their applications. It's also very rewarding when are struggling for hours with a tricky operation, and suddenly your code starts outputting valid answers. I recen...
