I usually avoid social situations if at all possible. However, there always seems to be something that I feel obligated to attend. For example, a coworker's birthday, going away party, baby shower, etc. If I go, it's so awkward, and I can't wait to leave. I usually don't say anything, then all I he...

It's not for me to say or even speculate. Not my business.

Well I've heard of people like me, who have no family to interview, being diagnosed, so I'm not convinced it's necessary to do the interviews if parents are hostile to the idea. I'm sure it's helpful. But not necessary. Just tell them your parents are unavailable and see what they say.

Mainly because my mother, in particular, does not want me to get diagnosed because she's paranoid despite the fact that I've researched it and assured her it would have no negative impact on my life. She accepts that I have it, but she's in denial about how much it affects my life. Once she's decid...

i read tarot to support myself in honolulu. every night, for years (and soon again, but anyway...) here's what i heard over and over and over: "i only have one friend." occasionally, it was no friends, or two friends, but anyway, over time this got me thinking. and i realized that many seem to imag...

The reason people probably say to learn now, even though you don't need to drive, is that you're young now. It's much easier to learn complex skills when you're young. Something to do with young brains assimilating things more easily, such as languages. Have you ever heard that if someone learns a l...

I sometimes talk to a hypothetical listener, and sometimes to myself when I'm problem solving. I rarely talk to myself in front of others, though it has been known to happen, especially the muttering I do when I'm concentrating on a problem. I also rehearse conversations and go over recent conversat...

Remember that it takes practice to learn, but eventually you will feel the car is an extension of you. Don't think of it as being pressured. Think of it as potential freedom. Learning to drive helped me feel so much more independent. I got my license at 18, later than most kids I knew, who got their...

i liked it better before when i thought THEY were the one with the problem. I always thought it was me with the problem, even though I had no idea what my problem was. It's interesting how differently people see that. I wonder if it's better to learn one is on the spectrum if one already thinks the...

I've never done Second Life -- I'm afraid I would get stuck there. I do lose track of time while on the internet, so I have to watch that. However, I find it such a great research tool, I don't think I could stand to give it up entirely. Especially when it comes to reading material. My local library...

I never understand why people spend so much time trying to find a good parking spot. All that time wasted, you could've been walking around inside the store already (or wherever you're going). I always take the first spot I find, usually at the back end of the parking lot, where there's very little...

It depends on where you live. My life would be impossible without a car. Very little public transport. Taxi's very expensive. Town many miles away. Often lots of grocery shopping to carry. Sometimes even building supplies. These are much the same reasons I need a car. Even when I lived where there ...

I like being me, unless someone is harassing me for being me, and at those times I usually just wish they weren't them. :? :P At least I wish they didn't have that inconsiderate, judging attitude that says I shouldn't be me.

Better off not knowing? No, because it explains so much about my whole life. I was much worse off not understanding this about myself. I always thought it was some failure on my part. I felt guilty about not keeping friends, not dealing better with family situations, not making more money or having ...

Any clinical psychologist or psychiatrist worth his or her salt will know how ASDs manifest in children and adults (contrary to what many say, I find it easier to see in adults). You would think so, wouldn't you? But apparently it's some kind of specialty, and most of them are clueless, or I wouldn...
